And a sarh tree on Najd's uplands, with drooping

Branches in a pool that kept it watered.

When the east wind blew gently and rainclouds showered it,

The breeze walked wearily, whispering to it.

A fair, companionable woman takes her noon rest in its shade,

You could almost unfold her and fold her, so supple is she.

Black are her tresses, white her upper chest,

Red are her dyed garments, yellow her collarbones.

I crossed her path, so she screened herself from my gaze behind her neighbor,

Like the sun when a cloud passes before it and conceals it.

And I slept, my locks strewn on the edge of the curving dunes,

And a waft of musk drifted all through them.

Then I awoke, and dawn gleamed amid darkness,

It began scattering its radiance from the darkness's edges.

    فالبرقُ يضحكُها والرَّعدُ يُبكيها

    And a morning cloud's downpour soaked my coat of mail and my colt;

So lightning makes it laugh, and thunder makes it weep.

And my eye, for love of a Bedouin woman who appeared,

Swims in tears that I was shedding.

So, if only she were mine! Yet hopes—most of them—

Torment the soul with this world and all that is in it.
