وَمُشْتَمِلٍand one endowed علىwith كَرَمٍgenerosity وَحَزْمٍand resolve
شَباةُthe point يَراعِهِhis reed pen ظُبَةُthe sharp edge الحُسامِthe keen sword
And a man endowed with generosity and resolve,
Full of generosity and wisdom,
the point of his reed pen is the edge of a sword.
His youth rivals the sharpness of swords.
زَجَرْتُI urged on إِليهِtoward him أَصْهَبَa tawny camel داعِرِيَّاًDāʿirī
مُرَاحَاًleft at rest سَوْطُهُits whip تَعِبَweary الخِطامِthe halter
I urged toward him a tawny Dāʿirī camel,
I spurred towards him a roaring lion,
its whip at rest, its halter weary.
Whose whip made the reins weary.
فَمَتَّعَso he delighted ناظِرِيmy gaze بِأَغَرَّwith a radiant face طَلْقٍwelcoming
بِهِon it فَضَلاتُlingering traces بِشْرٍcheerfulness وَابْتِسامِand smiling
So he delighted my gaze with a radiant, welcoming face,
He delighted my eyes with the smoothest gallop,
bearing lingering traces of cheerfulness and smiles.
With it the finest human qualities and smiles.
وَهَزَّتْهُand stirred him المَكارِمُnoble virtues لابْنِfor a son أَرْضٍa land
نَزيعِfar removed الدَّارِhome مِنْfrom نَفَرٍa company of men كِرامِnoble
And noble virtues stirred him for a son of a land,
And virtues shook him as a son of the land
far from home, from a company of noble men.
Of eminent people from a high lineage.
فَراحَso he became كَأَنَّهُas though he were ثَمِلٌdrunk أُدِيرَتْwas passed round
عَليهِto him الكَأْسُthe cup تَرْعَفُbleeds بِالمُدامِwith wine
So he became like a drunken man, as though there had been passed round
He galloped as if drunk, after
to him the cup, bleeding wine.
The cup of wine was passed overflowing to him.
