وَعَلِيلَةِand a woman languid in الأَلْحاظِglances تَرْقُدُsleeps عَنْheedless of
صَبٍّa lovesick man يُصافِحُclasps hands with جَفْنَهُhis eyelid الأَرَقُsleeplessness
And a languid-eyed woman sleeps, heedless of
Upon the languid eyes she sleeps from
a lovesick man whose eyelid sleeplessness clasps.
A vigil that greets his eyelids, wakeful,
فَفُؤادُهُso his heart كِسوارِهَاlike her bracelet حَرِجٌconstricted
وَوِسادُهُand his pillow كوِشَاحِهاlike her sash قَلِقُunsettled
So his heart, like her bracelet, is constricted,
So his heart's confined like her bracelet,
and his pillow, like her sash, is unsettled.
And his pillow's restless like her kerchief.
عانَقْتُهاI embraced her وَالشُّهْبُwhile the stars ناعِسَةٌdrowsy
وَالأُفْقُand the horizon بِالظَّلْماءِwith darkness مُنْتَطِقٌgirdled
I embraced her while the stars were drowsy,
I embraced her while the stars slumbered
and the horizon was girdled with darkness.
And the horizon in the dark conversed.
فَلَثَمْتُهاthen I kissed her وَاللَّيْلُand the night مِنْbecause of قِصَرٍshortness
قَدْalready كادَnearly يَلْثِمُkisses فَجْرَهُits dawn الشَّفَقُthe twilight
Then I kissed her, the night so brief
I kissed her while the night from a palace
that twilight had nearly kissed its dawn,
Had almost kissed the dawn, radiant, pure.

in resting places where chastity was familiar
On a bed virtuous, honoring chastity,
to nobility clinging to the hems of piety.
Noble, adhering to the hems of piety.
ثُمَّthen افْتَرَقناwe parted حِينَwhen فَاجَأنَاsurprised us
صُبْحٌdawn تَقاسَمَshared ضَوءَهُits light الحَدَقُthe pupils of the eyes
Then we parted when we were startled
Then we parted when suddenly surprised
by a dawn whose light the eyes shared.
By morn whose light the eyes did share.
وَبِنَحْرِهاand on her throat مِنْfrom أَدْمُعيmy tears بَلَلٌmoisture
وَبِراحَتيand on my palm مِنْfrom نَشرِهاher fragrance عَبَقُa lingering scent
And her throat was wet with my tears,
Upon her cheek, my tears left moisture,
and my palm was fragrant with her scent.
And in my palm, her scent left fragrance.
