Ah, for our night on the fringes of the protected pasture!
Alas for our night of tender anguish,
And our eyes were choked with our tears.
when tears flooded our eyes,
وَالعاذِلاتُand the reproaching women هواجِعٌasleep خاضَwaded through الكَرىslumber

أَجفانَها وَذوُو الهَوى أَيقاظُ
And the reproaching women were asleep; slumber waded through
and the censurers were wakeful, while lovers slept.
Their eyelids, while those in love were awake.
Life watered a meadow with my streaming tears,
فَسَقىso may ... water الحَياthe rain وَمدامعيand my tears رَبعاًa dwelling بِهِin it
فَسَقى الحَيا وَمدامعي رَبعاً بِهِ

قَسَتِ القُلوبُ وَرَقَّتِ الأَلفاظُ
So may the rain and my tears water a dwelling where
hearts became hard, words grew soft and languid.
Hearts grew hard and words grew tender.
