والدّهْرُ طَلْقُ المُجْتَلى رَطْبُ الثّرى
Ah, for my days in the environs of al-Liwa!
Alas for my days in the embraces of anguish,
And time was bright of aspect, its soil moist,
While fate smiles at the bereaved and the earth is still damp.

When tender youth's shade was dewy,
When my exuberant youth cast its shadows,
And youth excused me in my infatuation.
And my boyhood excused my heedlessness,

And my locks were dark; when they appeared,
And my infatuation, whenever it appeared,
The eyes of oryxes filled the chamber's chinks.
Filled the eye sockets of the bashful with languor.

And who hopes for the return of what has passed?

For youth does not return, once spent
Neither will youth come back when it grows old,
Are its days; nor do the evenings of the protected pasture.
Nor the vigils of the fever return.

And I have a yearning too great for my ribs,
For al-Liwa, inflaming the torments of love's anguish.
For the meadow keeps a fire burning in the bowels.

And burning anguish inhabits my inward recesses.
And an agony that dwells in the folds of my heart.

Oh, how dear the days of al-Liwa and its people,
Happy the age of meadows, and its people,
Where human gazelles are guarded by sword-blades!
Where gazelles are protected by thickets.

The garden extends, blossoming,
Beneath coral pebbles formed of drops of dew.
Its flowers beneath the pebbles of sprinkling dew.

And the anemones smile
After the breeze's whispered converse, as it grew faint.
When whispered to by the breeze at night.

Their narcissi reveal a flirtatious glance
In which a tear from the rain's downpour lingers bewildered.
That makes tears almost flow from the corners of the eyes.

That was a time for which I did not freely shed my tears
Such were my times; my tears knew no stopping
Bloodied, until it turned away and ended.
Until that time passed and came to an end.

And youth perished, as though it were
And a youth perished as if
A cast-off strip of cloth in the tribe's abandoned camp.
It were a prisoner in the pit of life.

And my head ignited, so my freshness faded
With gray hair; in gray hair are dignity and reason.
Into whiteness, and in white hair are dignity and maturity.

It is more splendid to look at than youth,
And what is darkness beside the clear breaking of dawn?
While far from the radiant dawn is gloom.

Man is not pleased by its rising;
And loathes it, while youth is desired.
It troubles him, while youth is craved.

For after it comes gray hair, in which there is still a garment;
After it comes white hair, and in it is a garment;
But after gray hair there is nothing except death.
And after white hair there is only decay.

Is to it as death leading to the grave.

The soul plays with wishes, foolishly,
While death lies in ambush for humankind.
While death lies in wait for souls.

But beneath it their poor are like the wealthy.
Yet the poor and the wealthy are equal underneath it.

The slave, like the master, has decaying bones;
Slave and master, their bones are alike,
The child is like the elder, the youth like the middle-aged man.
As are child and elder, and young man and aged.

A body whose fate is decay.
Of a body destined for ruin.

You honor it, yet none accompanies the one
Laid in his grave except piety.
Thrown in his grave, save piety.

And here am I, warned against what I fear
My excess, for the warner has arrived.
Of my excess, so the warner has come.

And he whose age courts forty,
Whoever nears forty years of age
While his error embraces him—may he never find guidance!
And is confused by his passion, will not be guided.

When gray hair's striped fabrics were unfurled,
When the white hairs of my forelock spread,
I folded my entrails around ghada-wood embers.
I wrapped my intestines around burning embers.

Youth's night did not leave me out of aversion.
The night of youth did not abandon my heart.

And I continued to wander in its gown
Among beautiful, shapely women like carved images.
Among the doe-eyed gazelles, like succulent fruits.

However she walked with affected gait, I thought her
You thought her steps drunken with languor.
Weary, while the magic was drawn from her.

She is like a bough shaken with luxury,
And a drowsy oryx calf in gaze when it looks.
Or like a bucket jangling at the well.

Her words are relaxed, her glances weakened,
Walking gently, or like a trembling sand dune.
Yet sorcery is extracted from her.

The whiteness of my hair, then turned toward separation.
The whiteness of my hair, so she turned away.

She gave me a sly glance from eyes
In which I was once slumber, but became a speck.
In which I had been an infatuation, but became a speck.

Driven from them by my awakening to lofty aims.
By my consciousness of the Most High.

That carried my companions with the saddlebags of racers.

Woven with the eyes of gold dust.

And they snatched its rays in the early forenoon.
Unless they met his gaze with their blades.

Its suppleness almost bends its shaft,
And the women launch
Like a cobra twisting its back as it flees.
Smooth pebbles at the enemy with the hands of boys.

No blindness or paralysis is condoned among them,
Fly toward their foes, in odd numbers and even.
Tell them, no feebleness or blindness!

No quarry they shoot is left to die unseen;
It is as if their eyes are reddened
So say to them: may neither palsy nor blindness befall you!
With anger, lined with menace.

With anger, were lined with flame for kohl.

When they proclaim their lineage, they count a noble ancestor
From a stock whose origin
From ʿAbd Shams, of Umayyad descent,
Lies deep in the ground and its branches touch the sky.

From a mighty tree whose branch reached the sky,
The descendants of God's friend, his elect,

In its defense, brown spears in kidneys.

And from Ma'add ibn Adnan among the tribes.
Their swords passing judgment upon throats.

The allure of wishes will take hold of you.
Clings to a rope whose strands do not weaken.
The aspiration of one seeking

Salvation has no ascent but to them.
The delusions of wishes take hold of him.

It had no beauty but their pursuits.
Like wandering livestock, chaotic and aimless.

They ruled the world when it was unadorned;
Or if they made peace, they steadfastly pursued forbearance.
It has no ornaments but their endeavors.
No scandal is uttered about them, and through them

If they wage war, their wrath pleases swords;
The ignorant avoid insulting the honored.
Or, making peace, they bind the knee-wraps fast upon forbearance.
And they extend open-handed

No foul word is uttered among them; through them
Such that the cups of wealth are filled by them.
The ignorant man avoids offering obscenity.
I will follow their guidance to the heights,

And below their forests lies the attainment of my goal.
From which fresh streams of wealth are milked.

And fold up my eyelids from the burning!
Yet reaching al-Suha falls short of their utmost heights.

While the worst of your ills contains rancor.
And my chest-bones fold around a choking grief,
Fate struck me with them, though I know not

Among bands whose proximity exhausts a noble man;

The worst of your ailments is one that wastes you.
If only you knew some of what he conceals

Not knowing what Muʿawiyan it struck.

They slept full—may their eyes be put out!—
Or hardship casts him down, he does not weep.
While hunger kept their neighbor's eyes awake.
The sword, its melodiousness is not known

Praise and satire are alike to them;
While it is sheathed, until it is drawn.
Whoever babbles in their praise is like one who satirizes.
And if action does not prove a saying

That almost race the winds even in their nose-rings.

Water you pour upon echoing stone.
One whose homelands are nothing but deserts:

A gallant who never knocks on the door of a miser
The listener picks up the parts he narrates.
Who has neither girded himself with nobility nor worn it.
And whoever desires to attain its heights

Unless I join their day-long journeys to night travel.

And my burning thirst will not circle stagnant water.

For wealth has hunting pits dug all around it.
