وَظَلَّتْand kept خَياشِيمُnostrils الأَبَارِيقof the ewers تَرْعُفُbleeding
May God bless with rain a day whose length revelry shortened,
and the ewers’ nostrils kept bleeding,
بِرَوْضٍin a garden تَمَشَّىwandered بَيْنَamong أَزْهَارِهِits blossoms الصَّباthe east breeze
فَتَحْسَبُهاso you think them مَذْعُورَةًfrightened حِينَwhen تَرْجُفُthey tremble
in a garden where the east breeze wandered among its blossoms,
so you think them frightened when they tremble.
وَقَدْand had مَزَجَتْmixed ظَمْياءُa dark-lipped beauty بالرّيقِwith saliva راحَهاher wine
فَلَمْso did not أَدْرِI know مِنْfrom أَيِّwhich of المُدامَيْنِthe two wines أَرْشُفُI sip
And a dark-lipped beauty had mixed her wine with her saliva,
so I did not know which of the two wines I was sipping.
وَقُلْتُand I said لَهَاto her شِيميsheathe لِحاظَكِyour glances وَارْفُقِيand be gentle
بِلُبِّيwith my mind وَخَلِّيand let البابِلِيَّةَthe Babylonian wine تَعْنُفُbe harsh
And I said to her: “Sheathe your glances, and be gentle
with my mind, and let the Babylonian wine be harsh.
فَطرْفُكِfor your gaze لاnot صَهْباءُtawny wine يَنْزوleap حَبابُهاits bubbles
قَويتِyou grew strong علىto قَتْليkilling me بِهِwith it وَهْوَwhile it يَضْعُفُgrows weak
For it is your gaze—not tawny wine whose bubbles leap—
with which you have grown strong enough to kill me, though it grows weak.”
