Is what I see, O Saʿd, a star or a fire

kindled by a smooth-cheeked, richly perfumed woman?

Fair-skinned, if she speaks among the tribe or looks,

ears and eyes share the enchantment.

And the riders travel by night, while darkness lingers,

as though they were secrets in the heart of night.

So they hastened on, the bases of their necks inclined,

where camel-saddles served as pillows for the sleepers.

When they came to it and greeted the one who stoked it,

their greeting was returned by one whose neighbor suffers at his hands:

a jealous man, surrounded by sleek, well-built horses

and inexperienced lads from among the tribe's young men.

And he said, “Who are these petty riders, and what

do they seek from me? May no house shelter them!”

And what they saw of him alarmed them, though he had no

blood-claim against them, nor cause for vengeance among their people.

So I said, “Travel-worn men riding camels

    with drooping withers, themselves worn out by journeys;

their padded feet spew forth, while exhaustion weighs them down,

blood that leaves its traces on the earth's skin.

And upon them is a company of noble men from Quraysh,

fair-faced, strong in the bonds of reason, men of virtue.”

He said, “I do not care, O brother of Muḍar,

whether, in God's lands, they go upland or down to the lowlands.

Travel on!” So we traveled, and I had tears I kept wiping away,

for fear of foes, though they poured into both my sleeves.

And at Kāẓima my heart was borne aloft,

on the night at al-Naqā, by talons of noble birds.

There, maidens strip the night of its darkness

with faces that, in the gloom, are moons.

Lithe, short-stepped; if one grants union, brief are

the lives of the lovesick lover's nights, no longer drawn out.

I yearn for it as I yearn for my homeland,

for there lie my cherished wishes and desires.

Spring buttoned its collar over it, and by night came

to it rainclouds trailing the hem of abundance.

And spring kept clothing it in robes of its blossoms,

which rains weave and furnish with warp.
