    And gazelles from Banu Asad—

my heart is peopled with love for them.

    They visited while darkness lingered,

and the veil of night hung down.

And Salma appeared, clasped about the waist by

a graceful maiden among them, lovely and long-necked.

Her gait was like the swaying of a bough,

while south and north winds swept over it.

And like her fragrance—may it never grow stale—

are lush blossoms sprinkled with dew.

And the skin of her cheek, through pampered ease,

is polished by fresh, tender youth.

And she has a grandfather, when she names her lineage,

given draught upon draught of glory's milk.

So we embraced, while her head-veil

was wet with falling drops of dew.

    قُم فَسَيفُ الصُبحِ مَسلولُ

    Then she said, weeping,

    “Rise, for morning's sword is drawn;

indeed, night's button, because the night is short,

    is undone by dawn's fingertips.”

And my resting-place aroused the riders' suspicion

before dawn, while my heart was love-stricken.

So the pale camels were mounted in haste

by a reprover among us and one reproved.

    And lightning appeared, creeping as

a shackled man creeps in his fetters.

Then Abu Hanash saw my sorrow—

a noble man with a long reach.

And he drew near to me, so I said to him,

“You, whose fire-stick sparks, are one to place hope in.

Watch it for me as best you can, for I have

    an eye occupied with tears.”
