Her phantom came by night as the night's darkness thinned,

and the veil had been removed from morning's face.

And the sparrows of al-Liwa stirred and sang,

and its doves answered them above the arak trees.

My companions and I were drunk with sleep,

and my worn-out camel lay on soft sand, its halter cast aside.

I wrestled with memories of the 'Amiriyya for a doze,

where sweet sleep was hard to attain.

Nothing startled me but the apparition and its reproach,

and dawn, whose smile stripped off darkness's cloak,

and bright stars tumbling toward their setting, as though

pure gold and its ore were being melted along the horizon.

As though night's darkness, with the star inclining

westward, were a sheath, and morning its sword.

So I said to my companions, when tears betrayed my love

and their flow revealed what my ribs concealed:

    فلَولاهُ ما ألْوى بقَلْبي غَرامُهُ

    Let my eye float and sink in blood;

for without it, that passion would not have swept my heart away.

Do not reproach me: love overcomes a young man,

nor does he turn from it for the reproach he receives.

Surely it grieved a clan encamped at Nu'man—

their brother's roaming and lingering in the preserve.

He is love-mad for a young gazelle with kohl-dark eye corners,

whose bleating rouses the 'Amiri's roar.

And among Ka'b he bows before a jealous man,

whose grazing herds find shelter with a protector of Khuzaymi pride.

And if war kicked him, little fledglings would take wing,

their roosts beneath the mail helmets being his men's heads.

Does he fear his foes, when Time's crookedness has been straightened

by 'Uthman, its reins cast to him?

If he offered the moons the fringes of a pledge,

then his protection would shield them from vanishing into darkness.

When he marches across the open land with a mighty army,

its dust turns the sun back, bewildered in the sky.

And he spreads a cloud of spears; his bows

are death's thunder, and his arrows lightning.

In his hand, guarding the provinces of the land,

is a reed pen that holds sway over their rulers.

And it borrows traits from bees and a viper,

so its honey gives life, and its venom kills.

To you, son of the best of the two towns, it crossed the wastes—

a Ghurayri camel bearing my saddle, its foot-straps split.

And I do not scan the lightning that rain follows,

if its cloud vaunts its gift of water to me.

And I turn my steed's reins away from it when

someone else is drawn by his thirst to a humiliating drink.

So you gave me a well-built horse of jet-black hide,

its girth wrapped around a lean-haunched wolf.

And it prances within the curve of its cheekstrap, as though

it had robed itself in night, with the Pleiades for its bridle.
