حَلَفتُI swore بِأَيمانٍby oaths يَنالُgain ذَووthose possessed of الهَوىlove
بِهِنَّthrough them الرِّضىfavor مِمَّنfrom one whom ثَنىturned عِطفَهُhis side العَتَبُreproach
I swore oaths by which lovers win
the favor of one whom reproach has turned away:
بِفَترَةِby the languor of أَلحاظٍglances هِيَthey are السَّيفُthe sword مُنتَضىًunsheathed
وَرِقَّةِand the delicacy of أَلفاظٍwords هيَthey are اللؤلؤُpearls الرَطْبُfresh
by the languor of glances that are a sword unsheathed,
and the delicacy of words that are fresh pearls,
وَريقٍand saliva يَكادُnearly الرَّاحُwine يَحكيimitates مَذاقَهُits taste
أَظُنُّI think وَظَنيِّand my surmise صادِقٌtrue أَنَّهُthat it is عَذْبُsweet
and saliva whose taste wine nearly matches—
I think—and my surmise is true—that it is sweet.
لَقَدindeed شَفَّنِيwore me thin عَتْبٌreproach تَراخَىgrew long بِهِwith it المَدىthe duration
وَماليand I have no بِحَمدِwith praise to اللَهِGod غَيرَexcept الهَوىlove ذَنبُsin
Reproach has indeed worn me thin, its duration drawn out,
and, praise be to God, I have no sin but love.
مَلَكتِyou took possession عَليَّover me العَينَthe eye وَالقَلبَand the heart بَعدَهاafter it
فَلاso neither العَينُthe eye تُعدينيaids me عَلَيكِagainst you وَلاnor القَلبُthe heart
You have taken command of my eye, and then my heart,
so neither my eye nor my heart aids me against you.
