مِنَ الحَرِّ وَالبَيْضاءُ شُبَّتْ لَظاتُها
And in a verdant retreat, we sought refuge beneath the skirts of its great trees,
And a spring meadow—we sheltered beneath the skirts of its great trees,
from the heat, while the white sun had kindled its flames.
From the heat, while the white sun's blaze was kindled.

تُزيلُ تَباريحَ الجَوى نَسَماتُها
An eastern zephyr remained, whispering intimately to us;
And an eastern breeze kept whispering to us,
its breaths dispelled the torments of passion.
Its breaths dispelling the torments of lovesickness.
وَلِلطَّيْرِand the birds have أَسْرابٌflocks تَناغَىcall to one another بِأَلْسُنٍin tongues

على عَذَبِ الأَغْصانِ شَتَّى لُغاتُها
The birds gathered in flocks, singing to one another in many tongues
And flocks of birds called to one another in tongues,
upon the tender branches, each with its own language.
On the tips of the branches, their languages diverse.

Those, then, are the slender forms of singing-girls for these birds;
So those boughs are the figures of singing slave girls; these birds
upon them, whenever they warble, rest their melodies.
Have their melodies upon them whenever they warble.

And what grieved me, after gray doves answered one another,
And among what stirred my sorrow, after gray doves answered one another,
was a ring-necked dove, the ridge of her back dyed with yellow wars.
Was a ring-necked dove, her back painted with yellow wars-dye.

She weeps with an eye that will not yield a tear,
And she weeps with an eye that yields no tear,
while I weep with an eye abundant in tears.
And I weep with an eye whose tears are abundant.

And were it not for love, I would not lend her the ear of one accustomed
to the clang of Surayji swords, their blades stained red.
To the clang of Surayji swords, their edges red;

Nor would a gazelle-slender beauty have mastered a proud soul
Nor would a dark-lipped woman have possessed an unyielding soul,
that seldom turns toward the abode of humiliation.
That seldom turns toward the abode of humiliation.

Through such a soul, lives are shortened in the maelstrom of battle,
Through it, lives are cut short in the thick of battle,
while lofty deeds desire that its life be long.
And lofty honors long for its life to endure.
