خَليليَّO my two friends إِنَّindeed السَّيلَthe flood قَدalready بَلَغَhas reached الزُّبىthe hilltops
فَهَلso, is there مِنany سَبيلٍa way ليfor me إِلىto أُمِّthe mother of مالِكِMālik
My two friends, the flood has indeed reached the hilltops.
My beloved, the torrent has reached the trees,
Is there, then, any way for me to reach Umm Mālik?
Is there any way for me to Umm Malik's abode?
وَلَوand if رَقَّsoftened ليtoward me قَلباكُماthe hearts of you two لارتَدَيتُماyou two would have cloaked yourselves
بِلَيلٍin a night مَريضِsickly النَّجمِthe stars أَسوَدَblack حالِكِpitch-dark
And had your two hearts softened toward me, you would have cloaked yourselves
Had your hearts softened towards me, I would have put you both
in a night of sickly stars, black and pitch-dark,
In a night whose stars were in gloomy state.
وَعادَتْand would have become خِماصاًhollow مِنfrom مُمارَسَةِenduring السُّرىnight travel
بُطونُthe bellies المَطاياof the mounts فيupon ظُهورِthe backs المَهالِكِof deadly wastes
and the rigors of night travel would have hollowed
The bellies of my she-camels turned lean
the bellies of the mounts upon the backs of deadly wastes,
From journeying in the dark to visit my beloved.
كَماjust as كُنتُI used to أَلقىconfront مَنwhoever يُبيحُviolates حِماكُماthe sanctuary of you two
بِأَسمَرَwith a brown spear عَسّالٍswaying وَأَبيَضَand a white sword باتِكِcleaving
just as I used to confront whoever trespassed upon your sanctuary
As I used to ward off anyone desiring to dishonor you,
with a swaying brown spear and a white, cleaving sword.
With a brown spear and white shining sword.
صِليunite with ياO بنَةَdaughter of الأَشرافِthe nobles أَروَعَa splendid man ماجِداًnoble
بَعيدَfar-reaching مَناطِthe reach of الهَمِّambition جَمَّabundant in المَسالِكِpaths
Give your love, O daughter of nobles, to a splendid, noble man,
Pray, O daughter of nobility, for the most glorious hero,
whose ambition reaches far and whose paths are many.
Far from worries, crossing many lands.
فَلاso do not تَترُكيهِleave him بَينَbetween شاكٍone who complains وَشاكِرٍand one who gives thanks
وَمُطْرٍand one who extols وَمُغتابٍand one who backbites وَباكٍand one who weeps وَضاحِكِand one who laughs
So do not leave him between one who complains and one who gives thanks,
Do not leave him between a doubter and a thanker,
one who extols and one who backbites, one who weeps and one who laughs.
A rainy, blaming, crying, laughing one.
فَقَدfor indeed ذَلَّbecame abased حَتَّىuntil كادَalmost يَرحَمُهُpities him العِداthe enemies
وَماand not الحُبُّlove ياO ظَمياءُẒamyāʾ إِلّاexcept كَذلِكِlike this
For he has been brought so low that even his enemies almost pity him.
He became so humiliated as if enemies pitied him,
And love, O Ẓamyāʾ, is nothing but this.
Such is love, O Samiya.
