And a dwelling, cloaked in the mantle of glory,

and we had been content with it as a summer home and spring retreat.

My learning clothes piety’s nose in proud height,

along its two sides, and eminence’s necks in lofty length.

When a youth scaled its summit, it fell with him—

one who fills earth and sky alike with pride.

And how could a roof like it bear ambitions

that the roof raised aloft could not bear?

And God defended me when He saw nobility

that would have sunk low had I not extended its reach through merit.

And had He decreed what humankind called for,

glory’s unity would not have been found intact after me.

So I ask God for a life that, whenever its years reach

a full-grown horse’s age, proves to be a colt for me when its teeth are checked.
