لِلَّهِto God (an exclamation of admiration) قَوْميmy people فَكَمْfor how much ندىًbounty (likened to dew) خَضِلٍmoist

God bless my people—how much dewy bounty
For my people, how much dew in the meadows,
is among them, and how many lofty lineages are theirs!
And how many banners for them flutter in the wind,
وَباسِمٍand a smiling man وَالجِيادُwhile the steeds عابِسَةٌscowling
وَالبِيضُand the bright swords مُحْمَرَّةُreddened الظُّباthe edges بِدَمِwith blood
And many a smiling man, while the steeds are scowling,
With swords unsheathed while the horses frown,
and the bright swords' edges are reddened with blood.
Their white robes stained with blood.
لَمْdid not يَتَوَسَّدْtake as a pillow ذِراعَthe arm of هِمَّتِهِhis ambition
إِلّاexcept that رَأىhe saw النَّجْمَthe star مَوْطِئَa foothold for القَدَمِthe foot
Never did he pillow his head on the arm of his ambition
He never rested his head on his arm’s strength
without seeing the star as a foothold.
Except to see the stars beneath his feet.
وَإِنْand if أَضاءَتْshone فِيin اللَّيْلِthe night غُرَّتُهُhis radiant brow
أَرَتْكَit showed you صُبْحاًdawn فيin حِنْدِسِthe deep blackness of الظُّلَمِthe darkness
And if his radiant brow shone in the night,
If in the night his anger flared,
it would show you dawn in the pitch-black darkness.
It showed you the dawn in the darkness of night.
مِنْfrom أَيِّwhichever أَقْطارِهِhis sides أَتَيْتَyou came ثَنىhe turned

From whichever quarter you approached him, he turned
From which of his lands have you come in pairs
his body toward you, out of generosity.
To incline to you his noble nature?
