بُنيتْ بِمُعتَلِجِ الفَضاءِ الواسِعِ
Yonder is Nishapur, the noblest tract of land,
Nishapur, most noble of regions,
Built in the midst of the vast open expanse.
Was built in the lap of vast open country,

Yet it has two kinds of cold: the cold of its winter,
But its winters are bitter cold,
If you winter there, and the coldness of al-Bariʿ’s verse.
Either fierce cold, or cold that pierces the keen wit.
