O my two companions, rouse them in haste,

Headlong, racing toward the edges of the watering place.

Night knows what its ribs conceal

From me; dawn reveals it from its entrails.

I travel by night and do not tarry in a dark ordeal,

The likes of which baffle the timid, fearful man.

And I embark on a venture whose consequences call forth

A calamity in which sleeplessness shakes hands with eyes.

For glory has perils; its hardships are braved

By one steadfast in combat, with restlessness in his swords:

    Radiant—no weakness probes his timber,

Nor does flattery flutter over his character.

When the dust clears from him in battle,

Eyes across its expanse share him among themselves.
