And a stopping-place I visited on the flanks of Ḥaḍan,

Where the walker loosens the two straps of his sandal.

And the ʿĀmirī woman sheds her tears in fear,

While the lovesick man is neither secure there nor afraid.

She says to me, as darkness casts down its breasts:

"Word of us is spreading among the dwellers of the protected grounds."

So I said, "Do not fear them: they are a small group

Who can neither put me at ease nor unsettle me.

It is a suspicion those people cast upon the innocent,

And your confidant's heart does not quail before them.

If we meet and no one is aware of us,

And I keep my secret, what can the tale-bearer do?"
