يا مجد دين الإله لا عجب
إنif قصرfall short الطالبونthe aspirants عنof أمدكyour reach
إن قصر الطالبون عن أمدك
O glory of God’s faith, it is no wonder
O glory of God's religion, no wonder
if those who strive fall short of your reach.
That those who seek you fall short of your glory
وياand O أباfather of (Abu) قاسمQasim لقدindeed وفرhas made abundant الthe
ويا أبا قاسم لقد وفر ال
قسمshare لمنfor whoever يجتديكseeks your gifts جودthe generosity of يدكyour hand
قسم لمن يجتديك جود يدك
And O Abu Qasim, ample indeed is the
O Abu Qasim, fortune has granted
share your hand’s bounty grants whoever seeks your gifts.
A bountiful share to those who seek your munificence
كمhow many a مملقpenniless man فيin صِفادِthe fetters of عسرتهِhis hardship
كم مملق في صِفادِ عسرتهِ
أطلقتهyou freed him بالجزيلwith lavish gifts منfrom صَفَدِكyour bounty
أطلقته بالجزيل من صَفَدِك
How many a penniless man, shackled by his hardship,
How many shackled by hardship
have you freed with lavish gifts from your bounty!
You released with your abundant generosity
الكَرَمgenerosity العدّinexhaustible والوفاءand faithfulness إذاwhen
الكَرَم العدّ والوفاء إذا
لقيتyou meet جيشan army of العفاةpetitioners منamong عددكyour armaments
لقيت جيش العفاة من عددك
Inexhaustible generosity and faithfulness, when
Generosity and loyalty, when they
you meet an army of petitioners, are among your weapons.
Meet your army of noble ones
ماnever دارcircled فيin وهمthe mind of باجلa dignitary (reading uncertain) بخلstinginess
ما دار في وهم باجل بخل
إلاexcept that ودارand circled السماحgenerosity فيin خلدكyour heart
إلا ودار السماح في خلدك
No stinginess ever circled in a dignitary’s mind,
No thought of stinginess ever crossed
without generosity circling within your heart.
The mind, only generosity fills your heart
يودّwishes منbecause of حسنthe goodness of ماwhat صحبتyou kept company بهwith it
يودّ من حسن ما صحبت به
أمسكyour yesterday لوif only قدmight يكونbe صبحthe dawn of غدكyour tomorrow
أمسك لو قد يكون صبح غدك
For the gracious company you gave it, it wishes—
Who enjoyed your fine company
your yesterday—that it might be the dawn of your tomorrow.
Would want to hold yesterday if it could be your tomorrow
تبَاruin! لحسادكupon your enviers اللئامthe vile فماfor not
تبَا لحسادك اللئام فما
يبقونthey remain إلاexcept للغيظمنfor rage from حَسَدكَenvying you
يبقون إلا للغيظمن حَسَدكَ
Ruin upon your vile enviers, for they
Away with your despicable enviers!
live on only to seethe with envy of you.
They remain only out of spite for your glory
داريتهمyou humored them يهبطونthey descend فيalong صببa downward slope
داريتهم يهبطون في صبب
ذلاًin humiliation لماbecause of what يبصرونthey see منof صعَدكyour ascent
ذلاً لما يبصرون من صعَدك
You humored them; they descend a slope,
I wish they would descend into the pit
abased by the ascent they see you make.
Of humiliation when they see your ascension
ألبسكmay He clothe you اللهGod ثوبa robe of عافيةgood health
ألبسك الله ثوب عافية
ولاand not نضاهاstrip it off ماas long as عشتyou live عنfrom جَسدكَyour body
ولا نضاها ما عشت عن جَسدكَ
May God clothe you in a robe of good health,
May God clothe you in wellbeing
and never strip it from your body throughout your life.
And no equal exists for you as long as you live
وزادand may He increase فيin مجدكyour glory الأَثيلِdeep-rooted ولاand not
وزاد في مجدك الأَثيلِ ولا
نقصdiminish صرفthe vicissitudes of الزمانtime منfrom عددكyour numbers
نقص صرف الزمان من عددك
May He increase your deep-rooted glory, and may
And may your magnificent glory increase
time’s vicissitudes never diminish your numbers.
And the passage of time never diminish your greatness
ونلتand may you attain ماwhat ترتجيهyou hope for منof أملhope
ونلت ما ترتجيه من أمل
تاملهyou hope for it فيin أخيthe brother of الندىgenerosity ولدكyour son
تامله في أخي الندى ولدك
And may you attain the hope you cherish,
And may you attain your every hope
the hope you place in generosity’s brother—your son.
