Muʾtaman al-Dawla—and for him: Glory be to Him who

beautified your character and your bodily form.

O liberator of the captive, and lord of bounty that is

near at hand, and O you of the cheerful countenance.

From the sons of Ṣawnī I have received neither what

I hope will protect me, nor any compassion.

So have mercy on a youth who, in praise, is never seen

falling short, even if the journey grows long.

And today, whoever has grown poor becomes

worth less in others’ eyes than a bedbug.

So, by Him who preserves you, form between wealth

    and him a close bond.

And acquire praise that, were it to reach Jarwal,

he would never have struck a single beat beside it.
