عج بنجد نحيِّي دار الرباب

جادها واكف ملثُّ الربابِ

I marvel at the abode of musicians in Nejd,

Its master provided and prevented the decay of musicians.

وسقى عهدنا بها فلقد كا

ن سريع الذَّباب هامي الذِّهابِ

And our covenant with it once watered,

For it was quick of flight and wandering.

مع خود تثني نبحسن التثني

عزم صبري عن سلوة وإجتنابِ

It charms me with beautiful allurement,

My resolve of patience from consolation and avoidance.

ذات طرف ساج وخصر نحيل

وأثيث داج وردف رابي

A gazelle with delicate neck and waist,

And lush interior and pacing camels.

شب في خدها المضرج نار ال

حسن للناظرين ماء الشبابِ

In her reddened cheek burns the fire of beauty for viewers,

The water of youth for onlookers.

مثمر غصنها المهفهف في كل

ل أوانٍ بالورد والعنّابِ

Its laden branch sways at all times,

With roses and jujubes.

حجبوها ضنا ولو أبرزها

لغدت من عفافها في حجاب

They concealed her coyly, had they revealed her,

Her chastity would have sufficed as a veil.

كمهاة الصريم لولا التثني

خالها اللحظ دمية المحراب

Like an ostrich were it not for allurement,

A glance makes her a statue of prayer niche.

غدرت بي وأعربت عن ملال

وكذا الغدر شيمة الألأعرابِ

She betrayed me and expressed her boredom,

And so is the nature of betrayal among bedouins.

يا عذاب الثغور رفقا بصب

سمتموه حمل العذاب المذابِ

O agony of frontiers, be gentle with the loved one you named the bearer of torment.

My wonder at you, gazelle whose hunting no forest lion can cease.

عجبي منكم لعين ظباء

ليس ينفك صيدها أسد غابِ

I felt estranged when grey hair appeared in my tresses,

Stars and suns of those encampments.

غربت حين أطلع الشيب في فو

دي نجوما شموس تلك القبابِ

And I will ask about her love which will reveal itself,

In a necklace of pearls.

وسأسلو عن حبها بشمول

تجتلى في قلادة من حباب

I was pleased with her from the meadows of difficulty upon which

Were drawn the tails of clouds.

رضت من صعبها خلال رياض

سحبت فوقها ذيول السحابِ

They are but mortals, with faces like the trusted faith,

And dispersion like goodly mention.

فهن بشرا كوجه مؤتمن الدي

ن ونشرا كذكره المستطابِ

The gentle beloved, the loyal ally, the accomplished noble, generous host,

The open-handed, spacious-bosomed to delegations.

اللبب الأريب والمخلف المت

الف والماجد الكريم النصابِ

The lofty minaret, narrow of excuses to visitors,

Bestower of maidens like sand hills.

العليُّ المنار والضيِّق الأع

ذارِ للوفدِ والفسيحُ الجنابِ

With a youthful hand in giving hands,

And a heart inclined to all things grand.

واهب البدَّنِ الرعابيب كالآ

رام والبدنِ رتَّعاً كالهِضاب

I delighted in him but have no refuge

From revered, forgiving and bestower.

ذو يد صبية ببذل الأيادي

وفؤاد إلى المكارم صاب

Swift to reward, near in palm’s moisture,

Distant in punishment, slow to retaliate.

لذت منه ولا ملاذ لعاف

بمهاب معذل وهابِ

A knowing scholar, if the people plunge into mayhem,

Speaking to rectitude.

بسريع الثواب داني ندى الكف

ف بعيد المدى بطىء العقابِ

He is a rain whose dew falls on every region,

And lion in every fray.

علم عالم مصيب إذا ما

لجلج القوم قائل للصوابِ

And temptation to protect a neighbor’s honor

A screen with palms spread in protection.

فهو غيث نداه في كل ناد

وهو ليث في كل ضِرابِ

An ornament with munificence, O scion of perpetuity

Sufficing the seekers of knowledge with abundance.

وهو مغرى بصون عرض وجارٍ

ظل يحميه طبيذل الرِّغابِ

Lord of perspective, without your assets

No request in councils will be decided with discourse.

ذم حليا بالجود يا ابن الدوامي

كفيلا بالنجع للطلابِ

You counted me in judgment for bestowal

While none of it was in my account.

رب راى لولا زنادك لم يو

ر وخطبٍ فصله بخطابِ

You bequeathed me aid against dearth

And made not mirage my drink.

أنت أحسَبتَني بسيب عطاء

منك ما كان بعضه في حسابي

Prolonged is my reproach of time,

And you carried us to the threshold.

أنت أورثتني المعين من الرغ

د ولم تَجعَل السرابَ شرابي

Misfortunes pounced on me while I stand

Between its claws and fangs.

طال عتبي على الزمان ونعما

ك تناهت بنا إلى الأعتابِ

So enjoy the feast, for there came

A herald of joy from every portal.

طفرَّتني بالنائبات وقد بت

تُ لقًى بين ظفرها والنَّابِ

And listen O’ blameless one who accepts only you

Despite abundant suitors.

فتملّ العيد الجديد فقد جا

ء بشيرا بالسعد من كل بابِ

Like a lover’s glance to the beloved,

And the morning breeze and tryst.

واستمعها عذراء لم ترض إلا

بك كقوا مع كثرة الخطابِ

When she is mentioned, forgotten are

Riders halted at the abode.

كالتفات الحبيب نحو محب

ونسيم الصبا وعهد التصابي

تتناسى لها إذا ذكروها

ما على الركب من وقوف الركابِ
