O ʿAḍud al-Dīn, may you remain obeyed,

acting justly in judgment and disputes.

O you, pleasing in cheerfulness and inner qualities,

    in appearance, character, and disposition;

    رأى نقودا بلا نسايا

    O you—whenever a supplicant comes to you,

    he finds cash, with no deferred payment;

O you who, on every day of generosity,

follow your morning bounty with evening bounty:

why are my little ones weeping with longing

for bread, there in the corners?

And you, after God, set coursing,

by His command, lightning through creation.

So have compassion on little children,

who, from hunger, have become like bows.

Their breadwinner is a poet; so judge:

are any remnants left among humankind,

or was there, before now, a generous man

toward whom high-humped mounts were ridden to exhaustion,

other than you? May you swiftly attain your wishes,

and may your enviers taste death.

So assign them a stipend, like those

whom you have showered with your gifts.

By bestowing bounty, you would lift from them,

    without delay, these afflictions.

And rejoice in this feast, live on, and make

your foes among its sacrificial victims.
