Seek obscurity, Abu al-Qasim, and let

Seek Abu Al-Qasim's tranquility and leave off,

someone else seek names and bynames.

Let others seek great names and titles.

شبه ببعض الاموات نفسك لا

شبه ببعض الاموات نفسك لا

تبرزه إن كنت عاقلا فطنا

تبرزه إن كنت عاقلا فطنا

Make yourself like one of the dead; do not

Liken yourself to some of the dead, do not

display yourself, if you are sensible and discerning.

Show it if you are wise and prudent.

ادفنه في البيت قبل ميتته

ادفنه في البيت قبل ميتته

واجعل له من خموله كفنا

واجعل له من خموله كفنا

Bury yourself at home before your death,

Bury it in the house before its death,

and make yourself a shroud from your obscurity.

And make its shroud from its tranquility.

علك تطفي ما أنت موقده

علك تطفي ما أنت موقده

إذ أنت في الجهل تخلع الرسنا

إذ أنت في الجهل تخلع الرسنا

Perhaps you will quench what you are kindling,

Perhaps you will extinguish what you have kindled

for in ignorance you cast off the halter.

Since you cast off the bridle in ignorance.
