وتمايلي طربا لحل عويصة

وتمايلي طربا لحل عويصة

أشهى وأحلى من مدامة ساق

أشهى وأحلى من مدامة ساق

my swaying in rapture at solving a knotty problem

And my swaying with joy at solving a difficult problem

is more delectable and sweeter than a cupbearer’s wine.

وصرير أقلامي على أوراقها

وصرير أقلامي على أوراقها

أحلى من الدوكاء والعشاق

أحلى من الدوكاء والعشاق

The scratching of my pens across their pages

And the scratching of my pens upon their pages

is sweeter than the modes Dūkāʾ and ʿUshshāq;

Is sweeter than the Dūkā and ʿUshshāq melodies.

وألذ من نقر الفتاة لدفها

وألذ من نقر الفتاة لدفها

نقري لالقي الرمل عن أوراقي

نقري لالقي الرمل عن أوراقي

sweeter than a maiden’s tapping on her tambourine

And more delightful than a girl's tapping on her tambourine

is my tapping, as I shake the sand from my pages.

Is my tapping to shake the sand off my pages.

أأبيت سهران الدجى وتبيته

أأبيت سهران الدجى وتبيته

نوما وتبغي بعد ذاك لحاقي

نوما وتبغي بعد ذاك لحاقي

Am I to pass the dark night wakeful while you pass it

Do I spend the dark night awake while you spend it

asleep—then hope, after that, to catch up with me?

Asleep, yet afterward seek to catch up with me?
