My friend—though I have fallen short, and in truth you are my lord—

Listen to me, for since you went away I have indeed suffered loss.

And do not neglect me, now that I dwell

In a place wider than a sea and narrower than a handspan.

And whenever my burning pangs raged against me,

And my longing returned, then bore down upon my thoughts,

I would ease my distress by unfolding a sheet,

In which you composed lofty glory, line upon line.

You sent it, and solace was among its camel-drivers.

So say: a lord has bestowed safety from Time.

    وَإِن تَستَرِب فَليَحوِها مَعدِنُ الدُّرِّ

    And [send] in it radiant stars that a sheet has contained;

And if you doubt, let a mine of pearls contain them.

And give them no mount but the back of lightning,

For sometimes it delivers and steers clear of deceit.

For the sons of this world have little loyalty:

You see what is reported, until you reach firsthand knowledge.

The mark of a fortunate man, when you have tested him:

He grants you water's softness within the hardness of rock.
