I complain to God of the calamities of time;

Which makes me drink like ships drink the sea.

لم يبق في العيش لي إلا مرارته

Nothing remains for me in life but its bitterness

There remains in life for me only its bitterness

When I taste it; its sweetness has vanished.

إن الزمان على ما تكرهين بني

O soul, be patient, or else perish in anguish;

For time is built upon what you hate.

لا تحسبي نعما سرتك صحبتها

إلا مفاتيح أبواب إلى الحزن

Do not regard blessings whose company delighted you

Do not think the gifts that delighted you

As anything but keys to doors leading to sorrow.

Were more than keys to doors of sadness.
