وإنand if جاءكcome to you القومthe people فيin حاجةneed
وإن جاءك القوم في حاجة

تفطرت حولين في العلة
And if the people come to you in need,
If folks come to you with a need
You tear yourself apart for two years over an excuse,
Their mouths agape with want's disease
وتلقاهمand you meet them أبداalways كالحاscowling
وتلقاهم أبدا كالحا
كأنas though قدalready عضضتyou had bitten علىinto مصلةan onion
كأن قد عضضت على مصلة
And always meet them scowling,
Receive them always as a friend
As though you had bitten into an onion.
As though you've gnawed on prayers' beads
