    يَدُورُ عَلَيهِ بِالذي قَالَهُ الدَّهرُ

    Yours is the highest example, and the liar's is the stone;

time turns upon him for what he has said.

    إذا بَرَزوا زوراً تَهيَّأ لَهُ الزَّهرُ

    You prosper through the opposite of your enemies' words;

when they come forth with lies, good fortune awaits its opposite.

They are pretenders, casting forth words, yet they have no

patience for the ugliness their consequences bring.

Is their day truly day when the sun is hidden?

And is their night truly night when the full moon is eclipsed?

    ولَكِنَّهُ يَشقَى بِهِ البَطنُ والظَّهرُ

    The vileness of what they said is not confined to one side;

both belly and back suffer from it.

The dust-gray earth shook because of it; no vegetation stood firm,

and the green sky grew overcast because of it, yet no rain fell.

Is this a punishment born of the Lord's jealous care for you,

poured upon the wrongdoer, while the righteous man burns in it too?

In you is a forbearance before which guilt seems slight,

though a rough ride is due to whoever commits it.

Perhaps tenderness will restrain you, extinguishing

the heat that injustice kindled against you.

People are only what you know them to be: all of them,

or most, however you taste them, are bitter fare.

If their acrid taste is not made palatable through fighting,

whoever is plagued by them swallows it down—they are a burden.

You, being what you are, are the most merciful intercessor,

devising excuses for them when excuses fail.

If you were to seek a ruling concerning them,

and the judgment were referred to you, you would say, 'It is reward.'

Since you are naturally disposed to pardon, whoever

seeks bloodshed from you finds his palm empty.

Had you wished, wrath would have taken the place of contentment,

and bright blades and tawny spears would have risen to your command.

Sleek, long-bodied steeds would have surged with you toward them,

like a west wind after the rising of al-Ghafr.

Upon them is every seasoned young warrior,

a slave to your command, yet free if you forbid him.

    سَواءٌ عَلَيهِ في الهَوى القرُّ وَالحَرُّ

    Disciplined, he has schooled himself beyond wrath and contentment;

cold and heat are alike to him in his devotion.

When he resolves, he hopes for no return; and when he strikes,

his victim becomes a pair, though his blow is single.

There, the man who faces you seeks no riches,

nor can flight stop the man charging straight ahead.

You would soothe a burning rancor that had not angered you,

but the guest of evil is honored with a cheerful welcome.

Yet in the best of humankind you have an example,

through which rancor departs and the breast finds relief.

God honored the Beloved with something like this

at Uhud; then the affair 'sought water from you' for him [text unclear].

After that, nothing remained of what pains the soul,

and afterward both land and sea submitted to him.

How many a gift comes with its face already revealed,

and another is veiled because of its preciousness.

How many a graceful maiden is cast aside for her ragged exterior,

yet plays with minds when the ragged garment is lifted.

Like your imprisoning me at the start of Eid al-Fitr, when

my poetry was late in reaching you.

You subtly raised my standing by lowering it,

a ruse from a quarter the naive man did not perceive.

So, at first glance, he thought you had humiliated me,

and that to you I was neither a friend nor wine.

The poor man did not know that through this

I have grounds for pride above all who understand poetry.

Had I not been al-Atahi in this art, no compulsion

from al-Mansur would have fallen upon me to recite it.

How great the difference between one who comes seeking favor

and one who grows up to be sought by favor itself!

The hawk was not confined because it was despised,

nor did captivity cheapen the nightingale of the spreading trees.

The one displays beauties before the eyes,

and the other's warbling is magic to the ears.

    أمنْ بَعدِ إخلاَصِي يُنَاطُ بِيَ الغَدرُ

    My leaving poetry was not out of any misgiving;

after my sincerity, can treachery be imputed to me?

    مَقَاوِدُهَا حُبِّي وأحمَالُهَا الشِكرُ

    Indeed, I have sent forth rhymes about you;

their halters are my love, and their loads my gratitude.

My love was not a matter of choice; rather,

whoever sees your qualities is compelled to love you.

The hearts' affections have rushed toward you,

as travelers gather around the House of God.

You are their magnet; were they to take form,

the passage between them would be too narrow for bodies.

For you overflow with bounty, and your mouth is smiling,

and your speech firmly bars foulness from passing through it.

Without you poetry would not flourish, nor would there be a claim

to first place in its arena by a colt sprung from its loins.

But hindrances have now kept me from it,

harming my heart and crushing my thought.

I have folded their heavy tale away from listening ears,

for the weight of the kernel makes the husk seem heavy.

These are remnants of thought that I had stolen

in an unguarded moment, before intoxication wore them away.

If these release me from your bonds, perhaps

despite the young man's despair, birds will cross with a lucky omen.

But if the other outcome comes, how many a beauty

is led to a husband while the bridal gift is still awaited!

May you be favored as you choose and attain your wishes,

and grow in worth; may your life be long.
