وَرَدْتَyou arrived بِطالِعِunder the ascendant of اليُمنِgood fortune السَّعِيدِhappy
عَلَىat حَرَمِthe sanctuary of الوَليّthe saint أبيAbu (father of) سَعِيدSa'id
You arrived under the happy ascendant of good fortune,
At the sanctuary of the saint Abu Sa'id,
كَمَاas وَرَدَarrived الكَرِيمُthe noble one أبوكَyour father قَبلاًbefore
عَلَيِهِto him وأنتَand you فِيin طَورِthe stage of الوَلِيدِa newborn
As your noble father came before you
To him, while you were still a newborn.
وَأمَّand he made for بِكَwith you المَشَاهِدَthe shrines حِينَwhen لاَحَتْappeared
عَلَيِكَupon you لَهُto him أمَارَاتُthe signs of السَّعِيدِthe fortunate one
And took you to the shrines when there appeared
Upon you, to his eyes, the signs of a fortunate man.
وَمَاand not تَُخْطِيerrs الفِرَاسَةُintuition حيثُwhen جَاءَتْit comes

And intuition does not err when it comes
From al-Mahdi concerning al-Rashid's character.
وَعَادَand he returned كَمَاas تَعُودُyou return وَقَدْand already تَنَاهَتwere fully attained
مَطَالِبُهُhis desires بِعَائِدةِthrough the bounty of الَوَدُودِthe All-Loving
And he returned, as you return, having fully attained
His desires through the All-Loving's bounty.
ألاَah لِلَّهِto God صَبرِيmy patience حِينَwhen سَارَتْshe set out
بِكَbearing you البَيضَاءُthe white mare مِنْfrom تَحتِbeneath البُنُودِthe banners
Ah, to God belongs my patience, when she set out,
The white mare bearing you from beneath the banners,
تُنازِعُكَshe contests with you الزّمَامَthe rein وَهِيَّand she تُومِيgestures
إلَىtoward جَبَلِJabal (mountain) المنَارَةِal-Manara (the lighthouse) مِنْfrom بَعِيدِafar
Contesting the rein with you, while gesturing
Toward Jabal al-Manara from afar.
فَتَقْصُرُهَاso you restrain her ولَوand if تُرِكَتْshe were left free لَحَطَّتْshe would set down
سَنابِكَهَاher hooves عَلَىupon ذاتِDhat (the place of) الوَصِيدِal-Wasid (the threshold)
You rein her in; had she been left free, she would have set
Her hooves upon Dhat al-Wasid.
وَجَانَبَتِand she skirted البُحَيْرَةِthe lake حِينَwhen مَرَّتْshe passed
وَفِيand on صَهَواتِهَاher saddle-backs بَحرُa sea المَدِيِدِfar-stretching
And she skirted the lake as she passed,
While upon her back was a far-stretching sea.
وقَابَلَهَاand he met her الظَّرِيفُal-Zarif (the elegant one) علىon يَفَاعٍa rise
فَلَمْso ... not تَثْبُتْshe stood still عَلَىon وَجهِthe face of الصَّعِيدِthe ground
And al-Zarif met her on a rise,
So she did not stand still upon the ground.
وأدْركَهَاand overtook her المَسَاevening ولَهَاand before her تَرَاءَتْappeared

Evening overtook her, and before her appeared
The domes of al-Abdaliyya, rising high.

She races another to draw closer to you,
Then casts her amid palms with tightly layered clusters,
كَغَانيَةٍlike a beauty رأتْكَshe saw you فَلَفَّعَتْهَاso she wrapped her

Like a beauty who saw you and was wrapped
By her maidservant in green striped mantles.
فبتَّso you spent the night بهاthere وعينand the eye of الحفظِprotection ترعىguards

So you spent the night there, while the eye of protection guarded
Your lodging, and misfortunes lay still.
وَصَبَّحْتَand you greeted at dawn الضَّرِيحَthe tomb بِمَولَويّas a lordly visitor
سَعَىhe strove لِلَّهِfor God فيin صِفَةِthe guise of العَبِيدِservants
And at dawn you greeted the tomb as a lordly visitor,
Who strove for God in the guise of a servant.
وَخَفَفْتَand you shortened الزّيَارَةَthe visit وَهوَand that is رَأيٌa judgment
يُصَوبُهُdeem it right ذَوُوthose possessing الرَّأيِjudgment السَّدِيدِsound
And you kept the visit brief—a judgment
Approved by those of sound judgment.
وَحُزْتَand you gained بِلَيلَتَينِin two nights عزِيزَprecious كَنزٍtreasure

And in two nights you gained a precious treasure,
Which you will distribute for ever and ever.
وَأُبْتَand you returned وَلَمْand did not تَغِبْyou become absent ماwhile غِبتَyou were absent عَنِّيfrom me

And you returned; while absent from me, you were never truly absent,
But the mystery of beholding you eluded me.

And how often I turned after you the gaze of one hoping for
Lightning-flashes of reunion from the thunder of estrangement.
فَلَمْso ... not أُسعَفْI was granted help وَلَوand had أومَضْتَyou flashed شيئاًanything

سَبَقْتُI would have preceded إلَيكَto you رُكبَانَthe riders of البَرِيدِthe post
Yet I was not granted my wish; had you flashed the slightest signal,
I would have reached you before the post riders.

And among life's hardships for those who seek it
Is the sundering of the desired from the desirer.

There is no harm in my company, if you wish;
And is any welcome as wide as your embrace of delegations?

Indeed, a hopeful man who meets you one day
And forgets you afterward is surely cold of heart.

Soundness of heart and a welcoming face,
Little formality and perfect generosity.

I have no intention in this reproach,
But the flow of the poem drew it forth.

Yet the station is too exalted for me
To be constrained by it to seek fresh permission.

Conjured by the imaginings of the envious.

How brazen of him not to have considered this,
While your heart is among my witnesses in the case.

And when you arrived at al-Marsa, we recalled
Your earlier arrival at Jabal al-Julud.

And said, 'Good fortune is with Abu Sa'id.'

Confirming that your resolve is ever growing.

Hoping for a gracious return from your favor,
And asking you to renew the covenants.

And at their arrival they offered something precious,
Most precious of all were smooth-cheeked women.

Nor any turning aside from seeking your abode.
