الحمد لله الذي أرشدنا

معرفة المختار من أشياخنا

Praise be to God, who guided us

to recognize the chosen one among our sheikhs.

الشيخ من خصاله اثنا عشر

فستة من آدم أبي البشر

The sheikh has twelve qualities;

so six come from Adam, father of humankind.

الحزن والبكاء من يعقوب

والشوق والصبابة مطلوب

Sorrow and weeping come from Jacob,

and longing and ardent love are sought.

ويوسف ينال منه الصدق

ومعه الأمانة كي يرقى

And from Joseph, truthfulness is gained,

and with it, trustworthiness, so that he may rise.

ثم المناجاة من موسى مرت

ثم الاخلاص لابهذا يعبث

Then intimate prayer was passed on from Moses,

then sincerity—he does not trifle with this.

والزهد والسياحة من عيسى

تواضع محمد لا ينسى

And asceticism and wandering come from Jesus;

Muhammad's humility is not forgotten.

والخلق الحسان يا فتاة

أحسنها آداب في الثقات

And fine character, O young woman:

its finest expression is good manners among the trustworthy.

من لم يكن بهذه المثابة

ليس إلاالخسران قد أصابه

Whoever is not of this caliber,

nothing but loss has befallen him.

ويأخذ من الطيور أربع

نظافة الحمام لا تضيع

And he takes four qualities from the birds:

do not neglect the pigeon's cleanliness.

من الغراب الحذق ثم الصمت

من حرمة الباز قد استفدت

Skill from the crow; then silence,

which I have learned from the hawk's dignity.

وكرم الديك وثم أرفع

من به أصغر ما عليه أجمع

And the rooster's generosity; and then something loftier—

from what is in it, the smallest of all that lies upon it [wording unclear].

فعدم التغيير بأي شيء

لو جيفة وضعت فيه ياخي

Thus, remaining unchanged by anything,

even if a carcass were placed in it, O my brother.
