O Sa'd, in your name lies a good omen for whoever bids it speak.
O Sa'd, I invoke your name, so who will speak?
May a streaming downpour greet your dwellings.
A lover sings the praise of your abode overflowing

Tell me of the gazelle dwelling at Rama:
Tell us of the people staying in Ramah,
Did they take his tents westward, or eastward?
Have they pitched their tents facing west or east?

When I last knew of them, they camped at al-Udhayb, bound for
I remember when they descended to Al-Adhaib heading
the valley of al-Aqiq, and after that al-Abraq.
Towards Wadi Al-Aqeeq and beyond to Al-Abraq

Those dwellings—I did not lose myself in their traces
Those dwellings, I did not care for their features
except to hear their words, if they could speak.
Except to hear them speak, if only they would

وَالقَلْب بِالسُّكَّانِ مِنْهَا أعْلَقُ
The tongue mentions the dwelling by allusion,
The tongue recalls the house turning away
while the heart is more attached to its inhabitants.
While the heart clings to its dwellers intensely

The height of ambitions lures it with grace

حَتَّى عَشِقْتُ وَلُمْتُ مَنْ لاَ يَعْشَقُ
And for a cheek I set my learning aside,
To a coquette I turned my knowledge aside
until I fell in love and blamed whoever does not love.
Until I loved and became enamored with one who loves not

And I forgot the talk of maidens that has
He has cast off the bridle for a gleaming flash!'
No modesty like a brilliant lightning flash

They gazed as one free of love gazes at rain clouds,
They looked just as Al-Khalil looked flirtatiously
but when they saw her, they stared, transfixed.
But when they saw her, they melted away

She smiles, revealing a lightning-like gleam, whose light was seen
Dazzling like lightning, whoever spent the night angry at it
by one who spent the night in displeasure, yearning for it.
Yearns to see its light at dawn

Behind her bracelets, a dawn appears which if
a dawn that tells the truth when the sky lies.
The sky lies, it speaks the truth

She is delicate as a fragrant branch caressed
by a copious torrent from the side of the pebbled plain.
By a torrential flood from the side of Al-Bat'ha

That is the woman who departed, my heart in her wake,
She whose procession my heart followed
like a hawk circling in pursuit of fleeing prey.
Like a falcon trailing a fleeting prey

I have not forgotten when she said, as I bade her farewell:
I cannot forget when she bade me farewell
'The companions have departed; tell me, in whom can we trust?'
The time of parting had come, so she asked whom do we trust?
قُلْنَاwe said عَلِيُّAli بنُson of الحُسَينِal-Husayn مَلاذُنَاour refuge

We said: “Ali ibn Al-Hussein is our refuge”
She said: 'Then you have won, though al-Ablaq is impregnable.'
She said: “You are fortunate when the courageous becomes prevailing”

He is the one in whose presence the stranger forgets
He who when the stranger stays near him
his homelands, and through whom even the destitute gives freely.
Forgets his homeland and is generous to sycophants

A king—the days of youth have their beauties,
A possession of the days of youth, embodying perfections
and when they are counted, he is their choicest.
Yet if you count them, the best part of it is little

Time erred, bringing him forth outside his proper season,
Time has wronged him, out of his era
and many a thing is created out of season.
And many a thing is created before its due time

وَاستَرْضَعَتْهُ وَهيَ عُجْفاً شَملَقُ
The days conceived him in their spinsterhood,
The days carried him in their humiliation
and had him suckled, though a gaunt old crone.
And nurtured him while they were withered and worn out
وَبِهِand through him استَعَادَتْshe regained مَاwhat مَضَىhad passed منof عُمرِهَاher life

Through him she regained her vanished years
Through him, they regained what had passed of their life
and her youth; thus are customary ways broken.
And youth, customs too can be changed

When he shouldered the heavy burden of his vengeance,
When he took on the heavy burden to avenge
firm resolve best befitted the valiant young lord.
And wisdom through steadfast determination is more appropriate

And he strove to regain sovereignty, resolute,
And he strove to restore the kingdom with determination
like an arrow shooting through and out behind its quarry.
Like an arrow slipping through the bow

After the hands of fate had tossed him
into every place that terrifies a roaming band and bars its way.
Into every frightening and terrifying situation

Like the crescent moon when it attains fullness and its course
the western lands and the East know his whereabouts.
East and west know its existence

Let alone a lion, when war intensifies
and refuge is sought with him when the battalion is alarmed.
In whom the elephants can seek refuge

You will find him initiating great endeavors
and through every pass he is first to combat.
And preceding to every dangerous confrontation

From the army's ocean he poured forth streams to drink from,
So he brought forth springs from the sea of Al-Khamis
with which the hill roads and the wide plain were choked.
With which the roads of sustenance and livelihood overflowed

Its floods gush from the stomach of islands

As if they are ravens carrying atop them
the lions of al-Shara, urged onward at every glance.
The lion of valor, striking with every feather

Daylong travel did not weary them in their night journeys,
Maneuvering them in the dark deterred them not
no, nor does crossing the wastes wear them out.
No, nor the cutting off of supplies stopped them

We said the omens’ talk of it is more truthful

The palm of al-Kaf did not repel his onslaught, nor
Neither the blocking of hands, nor trenches
did its breastwork and trench ward off death.
Prevented its onslaught and barricades

And Tunis called him after her Thursday's dawn,
Then Tunisia invited it after the dawn of its Al-Khamis
while skulls were split in every quarter.
And zeal in every direction burst forth

So the two embraced then, from an excess of love,
So they embraced then, out of intense passion
as the love-struck does when the yearning lover sees him.
That is how the eager one acts when he sees the coquette

And so do perils meet those who
who enters narrow straits and is true in his resolve.
Venture into straits with sincere determination

It gained through him alone, Tunisia did
which neither Dar al-Salam nor Jilliq has known.
The abode of peace did not attain it, by God

Only to be prevented, while it flows to all people?

From the young man who is furious and enraged:

يَروِي الغَبِيُّ حَدِيثَهَا وَالأشْدَق
Time wears away, but their form is ever renewed;
Time perishes while their creation is renewed
both dullard and eloquent recount their tale.
The foolish and the wise share tales of them
فانظُرْso regard لَهَاthem نَظَرَwith the regard of الشَّقِيقِa brother وَأولِهَاand grant them
فانظُرْ لَهَا نَظَرَ الشَّقِيقِ وَأولِهَا

خُلُقَ الكَرِيمِ فَإنَّ مِثلَكَ يَشْفَقُ
So regard them with a brother's eye, and grant them
So look upon them with a brotherly eye, and make them
a generous man's graciousness, for one like you has compassion.
The first to enjoy your noble character, for the like of you shows compassion
وَاسْلَمْand remain safe بِحَالَةِin a state of غِبطَةٍbliss حَتَّىuntil تَرَىyou see

وَلَدَ البُتُولِ وَأنْتَ حَيٌّ تُرزَقُ
And live safely in bliss until you behold
And live in joyful bliss until you see
the Virgin's son, while you are still alive and sustained.
The Virgin’s son while you are alive, being granted sustenance”
