شَقيِقُكَyour brother غُيِّبَwas hidden away فِيin لَحدِهِhis grave
وَتَطْلُعُand you rise يَاO بَدرُfull moon مِنْfrom بَعدِهِafter him
Your brother has been hidden in his grave,
Yet you rise, O full moon, after him!
فَهَلso why لاَnot خَسِفْتَyou were eclipsed فَكَانَso that ... would be الخُسُوthe eclipse (first part)
فُ(completes “eclipse”) لِباسَa garment of السَوَادِblack عَلَىin mourning for فقدِهِhis loss
Then why were you not eclipsed, so that the eclipse
Might be a robe of black in mourning for his loss?
لِحُبِfor love بَكَىhe wept إذwhen قَضَىhe fulfilled نَحبَهُhis allotted term
حَبِيبٌa beloved حَوَىheld الحُسنَbeauty فيin بُردِهِhis mantle
For love he wept when death claimed
A beloved who held beauty within his mantle.
وَقَالَand he said وَقَدْwhile already ذَابَhe melted away مِنْfrom حُزنِهِhis grief
وَمِماand from what يُكَابِدُhe struggles to endure مِنْof وَجدِهِhis anguished longing
And he said, melting away from his grief
And from the anguished longing he endured,
بَدِيهَاimpromptu يُخَاطِبُaddressing بَدرَthe full moon of الدُّجَاthe darkness
وقَدْwhile already طَلَعَhad risen البَدْرُthe full moon فِيin سَعدِهِits good fortune
Speaking impromptu to the full moon of night,
As the full moon rose auspiciously:
شَقِيقُكَyour brother غُيِّبَwas hidden away فِيin لَحدِهِhis grave
وَتَطلُعُand you rise ياO بَدرُfull moon مِنْfrom بَعدِهِafter him
Your brother has been hidden in his grave,
Yet you rise, O full moon, after him!
فَهَلْso why لاَnot خَسِفتَyou were eclipsed فَكَانَso that ... would be الخُسُوthe eclipse (first part)
فُ(completes “eclipse”) لِباسَa garment of السَوادِblack عَلَىin mourning for فَقْدِهِhis loss
Then why were you not eclipsed, so that the eclipse
Might be a robe of black in mourning for his loss?
فَجَاءَthen came الخُسُوفُthe eclipse لِبَدرِupon the full moon of الدُّجاthe darkness
فَكَانَso ... was الخُسُوفُthe eclipse عَلَىtrue to وَعدِهِits promise
Then the eclipse came upon the full moon of night,
So the eclipse was true to its promise.
فَخَرَّso he fell المُتَيَّمُthe love-stricken man مِنْfrom وَقتِهِhis moment
وَأنهَلَهُand gave him a draught المَوتُDeath مِنْfrom وِردِهits watering place
Then the love-stricken man fell that very instant,
And Death gave him a draught from its watering place.
وَهَامَand wandered distraught مِنَfrom الوَجدِanguished longing أصحابُهُhis companions
وَكُلٌand each one جَرَىflowed الدَّمعُthe tears فِيon خَدّهhis cheek
And his companions wandered distraught with grief,
And tears flowed down each one's cheek.
