ما للشباب وللإقامَه

والشيب منتظرٌ أمامه

والشيب منتظرٌ أمامه

What has youth to do with staying put,

when gray hair waits ahead of it?

والدهر يسمح تارةً

والدهر يسمح تارةً

ويضّن أخرى بالقُلامَه

ويضّن أخرى بالقُلامَه

And time is generous at one moment,

and at another begrudges even a nail clipping.

والحرّ يقطع ظهره

والحرّ يقطع ظهره

أن يجتدي أهل الئامَه

أن يجتدي أهل الئامَه

And it breaks a noble man's back

to beg from people of baseness.

فليركبِ الأخطار في

فليركبِ الأخطار في

تحصيل ما ينفي الملامَه

تحصيل ما ينفي الملامَه

So let him brave dangers in

acquiring what wards off reproach:

مالٌ يقيه الذل أو

مالٌ يقيه الذل أو

علم يلقّيه الكرامَه

علم يلقّيه الكرامَه

wealth that shields him from humiliation, or

knowledge that brings him honor.

فسيحمد المسعى إذا

فسيحمد المسعى إذا

أرخى معمّرُهُ حزامَه

أرخى معمّرُهُ حزامَه

Then he will praise the endeavor when

the one who grants him long life loosens his belt.
