You enjoyed greater bliss at Eid al-Adha than at Eid al-Fitr.

Thus may you find both your fortunes throughout the longest life.

You bid farewell to what is past, not out of weariness,

and embrace what lies ahead with an open heart.

The days reveal to you what follows their first ten,

like the tenth day in cheerfulness and joy.

Through them you are gladdened by the succession of fresh days,

and through you they are gladdened by safety from hardship.

    فَكَونُكَ فِيهَا العِيدُ في سَائِرِ الدَّهْرِ

    The days would not be pleasing were you not among them;

your presence in them is the festival throughout all time.

Were it not for observing religion, no one living

in your time would know the feast falls on the month's tenth day.

If they are far from Mina, your dwelling is their destination,

and with those great gifts you cast forth camels for sacrifice.

There is nothing new in days being equally sweet,

as in Isa's days, while he remains in your remembrance.

Your right hand has clothed them in ample security,

and shortened them, though they are long beyond reckoning.

Their joys delight you; if any sign appears

of harm among them, you wage war on harm,

with judgment: whenever a crisis's night grows dark,

    from its direction the true dawn rises;

and justice whose shade embraces the chaste and righteous,

    and scorches injustice's ally without embers;

and forbearance: firm mountains may pass away, while its peak

    stands unchanged, heeding neither slanderer nor instigator;

and outpourings of gifts, in which you treat equally the near

and the distant, the well-clad notable and the man in rags.

In this you lent for God's sake, out of compassion

for His creatures, a loan that will meet you at the Resurrection.

You stopped when circumstance once brought you there,

to view Milyan's condition upon the riverbank.

In that crossing you saw slippery places,

with the farthest depths close at hand to anyone walking there.

Here was a camel plunging onto the crown of its head,

    and there a horse tumbling, belly over back;

    and a donkey-owner, his children's sustenance lost,

turned away, his donkey on the verge of breaking.

So you roused a resolve that had never slept,

and sobered a prudence that had never been drunk,

    and disentangled safety from death

with a bridge of wondrous design—what a bridge!

When the torrent reaches the shadow of its courtyard,

swords drawn from its rock rise above the stream,

and fling pieces of its belly in every direction,

saying to it, 'This is the recompense for injustice.'

They thrust toward it until they scatter its ranks,

    silent themselves, while it charges with a roar;

though they are five, they have routed its host,

though it is a mighty army in the open wilderness.

Pillars stand like maidens clasped together,

to dance, or attend a tryst at its appointed hour,

having fashioned their crown's linked ornaments from pure gold.

They enchant you, until you see nothing like their perfect balance

or their robe, patterned with white upon yellow.

More wondrous still: all of Milyan

pours through their hollows, and they take no notice.

Thus, in place of those perils, it became a refuge

where travelers seek shelter in cold and heat.

You absolved it of the stain of injustice, making

its innocence part of the reward you sought.

Not a stone but you promptly paid its due,

not a worker but you settled his wage with care.

Thus should kingship rightly be; for only...

    the age.

You are the one who raced them and outstripped them,

though yours is the name remembered at the end of time.

After kingship, you pondered acquiring a quality

to raise you higher, and were not content with little.

You found dead learning second to kingship,

and joined it to a line in the fabric of your life.

You matched every horseman in its field,

one versed in what comes with flow and ebb.

You addressed their racing company, and it turned back,

while you were the foremost among its ten riders.

How many a subtle point it sent flying from inquiry's possibilities,

you sent help to meet it from the flock of your understanding.

It veered to the right, but he drove it back,

screeching toward the left at once.

He had only to rise above it, and it sank

to the ground before drawing near the nest.

None has enchanted minds like you, speaking

in the simplest words on a difficult question.

A stammer shielded you there from the evil eye,

turning malice's gasp back upon his own limbs.

You made up for it with spaciousness in your heart,

where all from the lowest depths up to the Eagle vanishes.

With it you embraced every hopeful person's hope,

and sheltered every fearful soul within its precincts.

No harm that it became a sign of your generosity,

as clouds in the sky are a sign of rain.

Whenever you doubled the mim, you followed it with a gift,

or the ba, kindness came from you close behind.

Were it not for modesty and knowing you are righteous,

we would call the stammer in your sweet mouth sorcery.

In you, and in it, lies mercy when someone shrinks away

before you—a sinner, or a petitioner seeking kindness.

The former gains a respite from your reproach,

the latter speaks at length of what leads you to reward.

And if, along with it, you add a smile then,

that, by God's life, is a glorious distinction.

Thus let whoever is enamored describe you,

in love with you, and proclaim what is secret within you.

I proclaimed this when you said, 'Describe me, and do not stray

from truth: truth best becomes the noble.'

So it came as safety comes to someone afraid,

or else as a white oryx wandered from her curtained chamber.

A panegyric in which, when I speak indirectly, perhaps

    ولَكِنْ إذا قُلنَا عَلِيٌ تَرَنَّحَتْ

    a rigid mind hesitates to believe it;

but when we say 'Ali,' they sway—

the hearts of humankind, yearning for that name.

O son of Husayn, with beauty true to its name,

I attained my wishes when I praised you in my verse,

for I have a craving for the measure of your verse,

though, in the balance, you stand above all thanks.

So remain in God's protection, warding off death,

uprooting enemies and rejoicing in goodness.
