A camel-driver's song reminded her of past vows.

So she rose, yearning for the desert encampments.

Then she longed for her beloved, so she is prey

between that call and this caller.

If she goes forward, she says, 'O my newfound treasure!'

Or turns back, she says, 'O my inherited treasure!'

No blame lies on her, when free of a reproacher,

for wandering lovesick this morning through every valley.

Oh, may God guard the neighbors who have stayed,

and water those departing with the downpour of recurring rains.

    For love's sake, patience crumbled

the day their mounts sped in the leading ranks,

when they called one another to depart in the morning.

O morning of departure, day of calling out!

That was farewell's cruelty: in it we drew out

from the tale-bearers' eyes the thorns of the tragacanth bush.

And we snatched what we could, but found no relief; we nearly

mingled our tears, had adversities passed us by.

Those are their silhouettes, now gone—do you think they

headed for the uplands, or the hollows of the lowlands?

If they have scattered beyond my sight,

then their gathering-place is in my heart.

Would that I knew: have they any knowledge

of the affection their servant holds?

If faithfulness were rewarded with kindness,

I would attain my desire with them.

I shall tell their phantom what has befallen me,

if they visit and I taste the savor of sleep.
