And a white cupbearer, hidden from the senses,

Save for a forearm she bared in convivial company.

From its upper end, rising in the air, was born

A surge, from which cup overflows upon cup,

With that which, if a foe barred this king from it,

He would seek to obtain from him for the kingdom of Persia.

I would liken it, if it had fingers,

To the binding cord of two bracelets on the wrist of the sun’s brother.

And it was asked, “Your upper end inclines toward the earth—

Why?” It said, “Love for the master of the throne.

    يَمِيناً هما في مَجمَعِ الجِنسِ بِالجِنسِ

    Twice I poured forth for him my prayer for good fortune;

I swear: both are where kind meets kind.”

As it was said, “The surplus pearls are wasted on the ground,”

It answered, “No; the earth too has a share from a cup.”
