مِنَof الدَّهْرِtime يَوْماًa day فيin الوِلايَةِoffice مَاnot عَاشَاhe lived
The reign of Pasha Ali has ended, as though he
The reign of Pasha Ali passed as though
had not spent a single day of his life in office.
He lived but a day in office though he reigned long.
أتَتْهُcame to him المَنَايَاdeaths وَهْوَwhile he فِيin عُظْمِgreatness قُوَّةٍstrength
وَجَيْشٍand an army كَثِيفٍvast مِثلُهُits like قَطُّever مَاnot جَاشَاassembled
Death came to him while he possessed immense might
Death came to him at the height of his power
and a vast army, whose like had never been mustered.
When he led a massive army the likes of which never rose before.
فَصَارَso he became دَفِيناًone buried بَعدَمَاafter كَانَhe was دَافِناًone who buried
فَقُلْتُso I said وَقَدْand already أرَّختُهُI composed his chronogram دُفِنَwas buried البَاشَاthe Pasha
So he became the buried one, having once been the burier;
So he who once buried others was buried himself,
so I said, having composed his chronogram: ‘The Pasha was buried.’
And I recorded the date saying “the Pasha was interred”.
