ومختصرُ الكلام فهمت منه

And, in short, I understood from him

In brief, I understood from him

a little, and much from gestures.

تملّك سائري وطلبت رفقا

فقال اسكت ففي هذا جساره

He possessed my whole being, and I asked for gentleness.

He took hold of my arm and I sought company

Then he said, 'Be silent, for this is audacity.'

He said, "Hush, in this is boldness"

وأبعد نيله وأودّ أنّي

وأبعد نيله وأودّ أنّي

أعاتبه فتغلبني العباره

أعاتبه فتغلبني العباره

And he kept himself out of reach; I wish I

And made success more distant. I wished that

could reproach him, but words defeat me.

I reproach him, but expression overcame me

ولما لم أجد منه اتصالاً

ولما لم أجد منه اتصالاً

صبحت عشيرهُ وقصدت داره

صبحت عشيرهُ وقصدت داره

And when I could make no contact with him,

And when I did not find connection with him

I visited his companion in the morning and headed for his house.

I became lovesick and sought his abode

وقلت له أما للخشف مأوى

وقلت له أما للخشف مأوى

فقال اطلبه من باب المناره

فقال اطلبه من باب المناره

And I said to him, 'Is there no shelter for the fawn?'

And said to him, "Does not the eyelid have a shelter?"

He said, 'Seek it at Bāb al-Manāra.'

He said, "Seek it from the door of the minaret"

فقلت فتحت من أمري عويصا

فقلت فتحت من أمري عويصا

فضمّ الميم أعجل بالبشاره

فضمّ الميم أعجل بالبشاره

So I said, 'You have resolved a difficulty in my affairs;

So I said "You have made my matter difficult"

for a ḍamma on the mīm brings glad tidings sooner.'

He drew together the meem - hasten with good tidings
