قِفْstop وَاعتَبِرْand take heed يَاO نَاظِراًone gazing upon هَذاthis الرَّقِيمَthe inscription
قِفْ وَاعتَبِرْ يَا نَاظِراً هَذا الرَّقِيمَ
هَذاthis المَآلُthe fate لِذيfor one possessing النَّبَاهَةِeminence وَالرَّمِيمِand the decayed
هَذا المَآلُ لِذي النَّبَاهَةِ وَالرَّمِيمِ
Stop and take heed, O you who gaze upon this inscription.
Pause and reflect, O passerby, upon this grave
This is the fate of the eminent and the decayed.
Such is the fate of the eminent and the insignificant
قَدindeed كانَwas مَنْthe one who فيin القَبرِthe grave مِثلُكَlike you مَاشِياًwalking
قَد كانَ مَنْ في القَبرِ مِثلُكَ مَاشِياً
مَاan emphatic particle بَينَamong إخوَانٍbrothers وَأهلٍand family فِيin نَعِيمِbliss
مَا بَينَ إخوَانٍ وَأهلٍ فِي نَعِيمِ
The one in the grave once walked like you,
He who lies in this grave was once walking about
Among brothers and family, in bliss.
Among brothers and family in comfort
بَلrather هِيَshe عَائِشَةُAisha التِيwho كَانَتْwas عَلَىto
بَل هِيَ عَائِشَةُ التِي كَانَتْ عَلَى
فُقَراءِthe poor دِينِthe faith of الحَقّtruth كَالأبِlike a father الرَّحِيمِcompassionate
فُقَراءِ دِينِ الحَقّ كَالأبِ الرَّحِيمِ
Rather, she is Aisha, who was to
Nay, this is Aisha who was to the destitute
The poor of the true faith like a compassionate father.
Of the true religion like a kind father
زَوْجُwife الأمِيرِthe emir محَمَدٍMuhammad بَايBey الذيwho
زَوْجُ الأمِيرِ محَمَدٍ بَاي الذي
قَدindeed سَادَattained eminence بِالإحسَانِthrough benevolence وَالقَلبِand a heart السَلِيمِsound
قَد سَادَ بِالإحسَانِ وَالقَلبِ السَلِيمِ
Wife of the emir Muhammad Bey, who
Wife of the Emir Muhammad Bey who
Had attained eminence through benevolence and a sound heart.
Ruled with benevolence and an uncorrupted heart
فَاسألْso ask لَهَاfor her الغُفْرَانَforgiveness وَالإحسَانَand kindness فِيon
فَاسألْ لَهَا الغُفْرَانَ وَالإحسَانَ فِي
يَومٍthe day يَقُومُrise الناسُthe people مِنْfrom ربّa Lord رّحِيمِmerciful
يَومٍ يَقُومُ الناسُ مِنْ ربّ رّحِيمِ
So ask forgiveness and kindness for her—on
So pray for her forgiveness and grace
The day when people rise—from a merciful Lord.
On a day when people will stand before the Merciful Lord
فَعَسَاهُso may He يُحسِنُdeal graciously عِندَat ذَاكَthat time حِسَابَهَاher reckoning
فَعَسَاهُ يُحسِنُ عِندَ ذَاكَ حِسَابَهَا
وَيَزِيدُهَاand further grant her قَصراًa palace بِجَناتِin the gardens of النَعِيمِbliss
وَيَزِيدُهَا قَصراً بِجَناتِ النَعِيمِ
So may He be gracious in her reckoning then,
May He then treat her account with kindness
And grant her, in addition, a palace in the Gardens of Bliss.
And give her a palace in the Gardens of Bliss
وَيَعُودُand bestow in return بِالفَضلِwith bounty العَظِيمِgreat لِمَنْupon whoever دَعَاhas prayed
وَيَعُودُ بِالفَضلِ العَظِيمِ لِمَنْ دَعَا
لِعِبادِهِfor His servants وَاللهُand God ذُوpossessor of الفَضلِbounty العَظِيمِgreat
لِعِبادِهِ وَاللهُ ذُو الفَضلِ العَظِيمِ
And bestow great bounty in return upon whoever has prayed
And return great favor to those who prayed
For His servants; and God is the possessor of great bounty.
For His servants, and Allah is of great favor
هَذاthus وَلَمَّاand when أنْa linking particle مَضَتْshe departed لإلاَهَهَاto her God
هَذا وَلَمَّا أنْ مَضَتْ لإلاَهَهَا
أرَّخْتُهَاI dated her passing رَجَعَتْshe returned إلَىto رَبّa Lord كَرِيمِgenerous
أرَّخْتُهَا رَجَعَتْ إلَى رَبّ كَرِيمِ
Thus—and when she departed to her God,
Now that she has passed away to her God
I dated her passing: 'She returned to a generous Lord.'
I recorded the date—she returned to the Generous Lord
