يا طالبَ التصريح يا كيّسُ

يا طالبَ التصريح يا كيّسُ

صدقت فالتّلويحُ لا يونسُ

صدقت فالتّلويحُ لا يونسُ

O seeker of plain speech, O discerning one,

O seeker of permission, O wise one,

You spoke truly, for allusion brings no comfort.

You are right that hinting does not console,

بل إنما يحسن كتم الخنا

بل إنما يحسن كتم الخنا

وكيف يخفى الأحسن الأنفس

وكيف يخفى الأحسن الأنفس

Rather, only foul speech is fitting to conceal.

Rather, concealing defects is best,

And how could the finest, most precious be hidden?

And how can the best souls be hidden?

فاسمع إذاً وانعم بها كلمةً

فاسمع إذاً وانعم بها كلمةً

ربي عليّ وأنا تونس

ربي عليّ وأنا تونس

So listen, then—and what a fine utterance it is:

So listen then, and be content with this one word:

My lord is Ali, and I am Tunis.

My Lord, have mercy on me while I am in Tunis.
