من رسم دارٍ كَسُحقِ البردِ باقيها
What stirred your eye, or nearly made it weep,
What has inflamed your eyes, or have they almost wept
At a dwelling’s traces, its remnants like a threadbare cloak?
For the ruins of a house with frost still clinging?

So Ghanima does not fulfill what she promised,
No gains can fulfill what you have promised,
Nor will your heart forget her until death.
Nor can your heart forget them until death.

نعتاً يوافِقُ نَعتي بعَ ما فيها
As for the sandgrouse, I shall describe her:
As for the wild ducks, I shall elegize them
A description, my account matching [some of?] what is in her.
With an elegy befitting my elegy of them,

صُهبٌ قوادِمُها كُدرٌ خوافيها
Earless and streaked, with overlapping layers in her plumage,
Grey scratching in their feathers, their roads
Her outer flight feathers tawny, her inner ones dusky.
Are turbid waves with muddy hidden depths.

Her beak is like a dry date’s stone, trimmed
Their beaks nibbled by one skilled with cold hands
With a file by its carver, deft with both hands.
Who fashioned them like the nibs of reed-pens.

حذارَ قَومٍ إلى سِترٍ يواريها
She walks like a maiden of the tribe, hurrying
They walk like girls of the quarter hastening
For fear of people, toward cover that conceals her.
Fearing a folk to cover and hide them.

She offers her breast to the chicks’ mouths to drink,
They feed their chicks with gaping throats
Or a young colocynth fruit that its marksman did not miss.
Or crumbs not thrown by their shooter.

When he appeared to her, she flew, already knowing
When she saw the folk she flew, and knew
That he had drawn near and that the tribe was coming upon her.
That night was near and the quarter's fold closing in.

She cleaves the air not far away, with her neck inclined,
She yearns where she has not flown, depicted
And is not directed downward toward her nearest places of descent.
And no arrow aimed at her nearest depths.

She takes up yellow [water], its remainder trampled,
She flaps yellow, her remnants still
Its [waves?] had been surging away from the tadpole.
Harmed far from the acacia's thorns.
