لَقَدindeed آذنتshe announced بالهجرِof parting هيفاءَHayfa لَيتَهاif only she
لَقَد آذنت بالهجرِ هيفاءَ لَيتَها
بهِof it آذنتناshe informed us والفُؤادَwhile the heart جَميعُwhole
بهِ آذنتنا والفُؤادَ جَميعُ
Hayfa has indeed announced her parting; if only she
Indeed she has intimated the separation tenderly,
had told us of it while the heart was still whole.
Would that she did intimate with that (separation) the entire heart to us.
وإنّيand indeed I وإنand even if واجَهنَthey (women) encounter شيئاًsomething كَرِهنَهthey (women) dislike it
وإنّي وإن واجَهنَ شيئاً كَرِهنَه
لكالسَيفِsurely like the sword يُبليwears out الجفنَthe scabbard وَهوَwhile it is قطوعُkeen-cutting
لكالسَيفِ يُبلي الجفنَ وَهوَ قطوعُ
And I, even if they encounter something they dislike,
And I, if faced with anything she disliked,
am surely like a sword that wears out its scabbard, yet cuts keenly.
Am like the sword wearing the scabbard down itself being scraped off.
