حيالٌ يسامينَ الظِلالَ وَلُقَّحُ
To you we outran the lash and prison; beneath us
To you we raced, though whips and jails beneath us lay,
Were nonpregnant she-camels racing the shadows, and pregnant ones.
Past oleanders flowering in the vales,

تحومُ عَلَينا السانِحاتُ وتبرَحُ
To Nafiʿ, not expecting what befell us,
Seeking no boon from those whom we obey,
Birds of good omen circle above us, then turn ill-omened.
Though over us the willing executioners prevail.
فإنso if أَكُI am مَجلوداًflogged فكُنthen be أَنتَyou جالديmy flogger
فإن أَكُ مَجلوداً فكُن أَنتَ جالدي
وإنand if أَكُI am مَذبوحاًslaughtered فَكُنthen be أَنتَyou تَذبَحُyou slaughter
وإن أَكُ مَذبوحاً فَكُن أَنتَ تَذبَحُ
So if I am to be flogged, you be my flogger;
If I'm the one whose body must be flayed,
And if I am to be slaughtered, you be the one to slaughter me.
Then you be he who wields the blade.
