أَلا هَل لِبَعجانِ الهِلاليِّ زاجرٌ

أَلا هَل لِبَعجانِ الهِلاليِّ زاجرٌ

وَبَعجانُ مأَدومُ الطعامِ سَمينُ

وَبَعجانُ مأَدومُ الطعامِ سَمينُ

Ah, is there anyone to restrain Baʿjān al-Hilālī?

And Baʿjān is fat, his food served with relish.

أَليسَ أميرُ المُؤمنينَ ابنَ عَمِّها

أَليسَ أميرُ المُؤمنينَ ابنَ عَمِّها

وبالجِزعِ آسادٌ لَهُنَّ عَرينُ

وبالجِزعِ آسادٌ لَهُنَّ عَرينُ

Is not the Commander of the Faithful her paternal cousin?

And at the valley bend are lions with a lair.

وعاذَت بِحِقوَي خالدٍ وابنِ أُمه

وعاذَت بِحِقوَي خالدٍ وابنِ أُمه

وَللَهِ قضد بَتَّت عَلَيَّ يَمينُ

وَللَهِ قضد بَتَّت عَلَيَّ يَمينُ

And she sought refuge at the waists of Khālid and his mother's son.

And by God, an oath has indeed become binding upon me:

تَنالونَها أو تَنشَفَ الأرضُ منكُمُ

تَنالونَها أو تَنشَفَ الأرضُ منكُمُ

دمٌ خَرَّ مِنهُ ساعِدٌ وَجَبينُ

دمٌ خَرَّ مِنهُ ساعِدٌ وَجَبينُ

You shall have her, or the earth shall soak up from you

Blood that has brought down a forearm and a brow.

وأَنَّ امرأً في الناس كُنتَ ابن أمِّهِ

وأَنَّ امرأً في الناس كُنتَ ابن أمِّهِ

تبدَّلَ مِنّي طلَّةً لغبينُ

تبدَّلَ مِنّي طلَّةً لغبينُ

And a man among men whose brother you were,

Who took a wife in my place, is surely cheated.

دَعَتكَ إلى هَجري فطاوعت أمرها

دَعَتكَ إلى هَجري فطاوعت أمرها

فنفسُكَ لا نَفسي بذاكَ تُهينُ

فنفسُكَ لا نَفسي بذاكَ تُهينُ

She called on you to shun me, and you obeyed her command;

It is yourself, not me, that you dishonor by that.
