An earless bird traverses the darkness; between her and her chick

at Mutla of Arik lie a chasm and broad plains.

Then she came—the sun's horn showing, as though it were

a full-grown white wild bull in the desert of al-Khabib—

to water her chicks; moist had grown

the throats of her unfledged brood, and their hearts.

Short of stride, downy-headed, as though they were

balls that blaze awhile and circle thirstily.
