    And no garment have people worn,

    whether new or worn-out, that is put on,

    like nobility of character for its wearers.

    So spare me the warp-woven, bordered cloak.

    خلوقَةُ أثوابهِ والبِلى

    For the noble man's merit is not changed

    by the threadbareness of his clothes and their decay;

    nor is the base man's nature changed

    by silken cloaks with fine warp threads.

    The noble man is generous in every circumstance,

    and the base man stumbles whenever he runs.
