The neighbor departs, when he departs from me,

Without my neighbor’s dogs having grown familiar with me.

And my female neighbor departs from beside my house,

Without having been screened by a curtain along my wall.

And she need not fear my peering in when I come

Upon her while she has laid aside her head-covering.

Such was the conduct of my forefathers of old,

Inherited from one ancestral stock by the next.

So my conduct is theirs, and they reared me,

As a thoroughbred is reared from among the foals.
