أهلِّيRaise your voice بالبكاءِwith weeping وبالنحيبand with wailing
أهلِّي بالبكاءِ وبالنحيب
فقدfor indeed نَزَحَhas gone far away المحبُّthe lover عنfrom الحبيبthe beloved
فقد نَزَحَ المحبُّ عن الحبيب
Raise your voice in weeping and wailing,
Greet me with tears and lamentation,
for the lover has gone far from the beloved.
For the lover has departed from the beloved.
وقدand indeed وَسِعَhas encompassed الحوادثَthe calamities يومُa day of رزءbereavement

And a day of bereavement has encompassed all calamities,
The day of misfortune has expanded,
at which breasts grow too narrow to hold their hearts.
And the hearts have become too narrow for it.

بِخَطْبٍ عاثَ حتى في الخطوب
And noble virtues and lofty honors have proclaimed
Virtues and glories have announced
a calamity that wreaked havoc even among calamities.
Calamities that have spread even to engagements.

مُبَرَّأَةِ العيونِ من العيوب
Oh, how eminence grieves for a chaste woman,
Oh, the ardent yearning of the noble ones for a steed
whose eyes were free from blemishes.
With eyes absolved of defects.

منابَ الشمسِ إلا في الغُروب
A fosterling of unassailable honor, she took
The darling of honor, straight and tall,
the sun's place, except in its setting.
Rose like the sun except at sunset.

And a child of verdant prosperity, she fluttered
And the upbringing of lush blessings waved
as a bough flutters, bending with the south wind.
Like the rustle of a branch leaning with the south wind.

And I have never seen a calamity like the news of her death,
I have not seen the like of her misfortune,
which swept away the hearts of young men and the gray-haired.
Which has confounded the hearts of youth and old age alike.

Even if they shook her earth from their fingertips,
If they have let go of her reins,
they have indeed filled it with beauty and fragrance.
They have filled it with goodness and benevolence.

And they have left within it one of the morning rain clouds;
And they have left her in one of the valleys,
so speak of a tomb—or a well.
So speak of a tomb or a small enclosure.

When a wind blows there, it is saddened
When the winds blow towards it,
that no path there leads to the rushing river.
It has no access to return.

And the wind reaches it only
The winds have reached her only
in self-deception, on a deceitful hope.
As a deception upon false hopes.

I say, now that her two heralds have announced her death
I say as her elegists have elegized her,
and her cubs are at a gushing watering-place:
And I yearn for her at a blocked watering place:

Did death feel no misgiving at squandering a secret
Does Time not lose a secret,
before which imaginings of the unseen are baffled?
In which even the perceptions of the hidden go astray?

And how has Time risen to a position,
where a dream-phantom cannot find its way to creep?
Where ghosts stray from pathfinders?

It crossed crimson deaths to reach it,
The red of death galloped towards it,
creeping toward it through black wars,
Lamenting it amidst the gloom of wars.

and every battle-tested, keen blade, adorned
And every experienced, fleeing person has adorned himself
with a mark that no peer can share—
With a brand not to be added to tax.

You see death, gloomy, wandering in it,
as sorcery roams in a disquieting glance;
Like the glance of sorcery in a dreadful moment.

with it, death mows down every champion,
Death plants every noble, lofty trunk
noble, upon a noble, sleek steed—
Upon a slender, delicate trunk.

And it has taught every deaf mute
by time's vicissitudes to scatter tribes:
The ways of fate that scatter people.

when it quivers in an armored warrior's right hand,
Whenever the standard wavered in his right hand,
you see death swaying in a slender branch.
I saw death looming in the rod.

عوادٍ من عَذولٍ أو رقيب
Let noble deeds weep, even if they are hindered
The generous will cry over her, even if she counted them
by obstructions from a reproacher or a watcher,
As visitors of neglect or watchfulness.

for the mother of orphans and widows,
Over the mother of orphans and widows,
when resting-places grow harsh against their sides.
When the places grow green with vegetation.

Death wrested her from a lion's secluded chamber,
Fate has freed her from the den of a lion,
whom the lions placate to keep him from springing.
While the lions stay away from pouncing.

Tomorrow, with distant separation,
though his meeting with her was so recent.
Not like her recent company.

He speaks to himself of her unseen state,
He speaks to himself about her absence,
with a conjecture that misses and wasting pain that strikes home.
With wrong assumptions and accurate regrets.

فكيف أضلها حَوْلُ الطبيب
Goodness found its way to her from close at hand;
Goodness came rushing to her,
so how did the physician's skill lose her?
So how could the course of time lead her astray?

Oh Abu Abdillah, and time has continued
before you days of astonishing wonder,
To amaze you with its wondrous wonders.

do you lose heart before time, when you are to it
Do you grieve for time while you
as firm resolve is to the breast of the wise?
Are the place of wisdom in the breast of the intelligent?

عزاءَك إنما الإنسانُ نَهْبٌ
علىat أَيديthe hands of الحوادثcalamities والخطوبand disasters
على أَيدي الحوادث والخطوب
Take solace: a human being is but plunder
Your consolation is that man is merely
in the hands of calamities and disasters.
Spoils in the hands of events and misfortunes.

And you are our share of everything;
And you are our share of everything,
so may you live on—the fullest share suffices us.
So you have remained, and sufficed, as the best of shares.
