O breeze of the east wind, may you never be a comfort, nor may there rise

for you rainclouds except when thirst-maddened and circling.

Nor may the gardens entrust you with fragrance, even if they have watered

the lingering trace of hidden love—those telltale whispers.

Just as you failed to carry word from your brother, though they had ruled

in his favor—many inviolable claims and sacred ties.

Perhaps, when we thought you remiss, there bore straight down

on you sword-blades, or fetters had bound you.

Otherwise, rights have been lost, and fruitless are

the means of appeal; structures and pillars have collapsed.

So let that suffice: do not reject the excuse after that,

and even if it is an injustice, it is undoubtedly necessary.
