هُوit الهوىlove وقديماًand long ago كنتُI used to أَحْذَرُهُI fear it
السُّقْمُsickness مَوْرِدُهُits place of arrival والموتُand death مَصْدَرُهits place of departure
It is love, and long ago I used to fear it.
It is passion, though long ago I used to shun it,
Sickness is its entry, and death its exit.
Illness is its resort, and death is its source.
ياO لوعةًburning anguish هيit أحلىsweeter منْthan مُنىwishes أملٍhope
الآنَnow أعْرفُI know شيئاًsomething كُنتُI used to أنكِرُهI deny it
O burning anguish, sweeter than the wishes of hope!
Oh what sorrow that is sweeter than the joy of hope!
Now I know something I used to deny.
Now I know something I used to deny.

أقلُّthe least شيءٍthing إذاif فكّرْتَyou reflect أكْثرهthe most of it
Longing in earnest, whose beginning was jest;
Serious is this longing, though it began as jest,
Its slightest part, if you reflect, is its greatest.
The least of it, if you ponder, is plentiful.
وليand I have حَبِيبٌa beloved وإنand even though شطَّgrew distant المَزَارُthe place of visiting بهwith him
وقدْand perhaps أقُولُI say نأَىhe has gone far away لولاwere it not for تَذكُّرُهremembering him
And I have a beloved, though far is the way to him;
And I have a lover, though the shrine has taken him far,
And I might say he is far away, were it not for remembering him.
And I say he is distant, were it not for remembering him.
