Is it your mouth's saliva, or the daughter of the vines?

And is it your wafting fragrance, or musk in Darin?

And is it your coquettish, bewitching glance, or fate,

Or Dhu al-Fiqar, striking on the day of Siffin?

And is it your sweet, cool, gleaming mouth, or hail,

Or a flash of your favor that turns me back today?

When its pearls appear to me, strung in a row,

I scatter the pearls of my tears, unconcealed.

And is it your cheek's luster, or wine in a crystal cup,

Pleasing in the beauty of its radiance and color?

And is it your soft, lush figure, or a branch,

Swaying gently over the dunes of Yabrin?

When it bends and the passing breeze flutters over it,

How can a ban-tree bough compare with it in suppleness?

A body God created, when He gave it form,

From the water of a pearl, while people are made of clay.

And God forbid that it be reckoned human,

Or compared with the beauty of wide-eyed maidens.

The hand of beauty is now upon the brocade of his cheek,

    Embroidering enchantment from it in varied designs;

And when the water of youth flowed through it, it opened

The roses of beauty, or the roses of gardens.

Alas for my heart, destroyed by burning pangs

From a coquettish young gazelle, miserly with union.

    يُمِيتُني تارةً فِيها ويُحْييني

    He turns languid eyes toward me, though free of sickness;

With them he kills me at times, and gives me life.

Let my soul be his ransom against every calamity,

Even if he himself does not ransom me from them.

My only share from him is a sleepless eye,

Tearful, and a longing that hurries me toward his hands.

I soothe my soul over him with hopes, mere deceits,

Even if, in loving him, this does me no good.

Many a reprover sought to chide me over him; I told him:

“Do not reproach me, for reproach entices me.”

They said, “You have strayed from the path of right guidance.” I told them:

“May right guidance bring you joy; waywardness brings me joy.”

Loving him suffices me; I seek no substitute for it.

So I gained from it a share, without being cheated.

    فخلِّني اليومَ يَبْريني وَيُضْنيني

    By God, I shall not lose patience with it as long as I live;

So leave me today—let it wear me down and waste me away.

How many sighs whose heat fire borrows,

And burning anguish in the folds of my ribs, whispering to me,

And grievous sorrow, painful longing, and heartache

Within my breast, unfading, though it wears me away!

A love for which I recklessly traversed every deadly peril,

And kept stumbling through its dark terrors.

And for it I plunged headlong into the depths of death,

And said amid it to sorrow's burning pangs, “Depart!”

Why are my tears obedient in my love for him, and why

Does my fine patience with him fail me?

It is as though my tears, their channels choked,

Were grief pent up in the inward depths of one who mourns.

Tell me, Abu Qasim: why have I grown thirsty, when

My thirst's relief lies in your hands—if you wished, you could quench it?

And what turns you from the longings of one distressed,

Enthralled by love for you, lovesick, bewitched by you?

Be as you wish; it is enough for me. I shall not change, even if

I do not gain closeness to you or assured access.

    You are life, and I have nowhere to turn away from you;

And you are my share of this world and of faith.
